Charlton Athletic Closing In On Championship Defender

Charlton Athletic are close to completing the signing of Blackburn Rovers left-back Tayo Edun, according to Football League World via a post on their website.

Edun was a standout performer at League One level in the 2020-21 season for Lincoln City, with the 25-year-old now looking set for a return to the third tier, with Charlton Athletic emerging as the front runners for his signature.

“Charlton Athletic are closing in on a deal to sign Blackburn Rovers player Tayo Edun.”

Ambitious Addicks

Charlton Athletic are going into their fourth season in the third tier following their relegation in the 2019-20 campaign, failing to achieve a play-off position in any of those seasons.

However, the SE7 outfit’s summer transfer window has caught the eye of many. Following the club’s purchase by Global Football Partners, Dean Holden’s side have added many top League One performers to their ranks, with Panutche Camara, Harry Isted and Alfie May amongst the new names through the door at The Valley.

Who is Tayo Edun?

The Islington-born defender graduated through the youth ranks at Fulham, where he signed his first professional contract in 2016, before making his first-team debut in a League Cup fixture against Leyton Orient.

Edun spent four years at Fulham, being loaned out to Ipswich Town for the first half of the 2018-19 season, making seven appearances while scoring his first senior goal in a 2-2 draw against Blackburn Rovers. The left-back’s loan spell was cut short as he suffered an eye injury in December 2018 and was subsequently recalled back to Craven Cottage.

Upon release at the end of his contract with the Cottagers, Edun made the switch to Lincolnshire in January 2020, penning a two-and-a-half-year deal with Lincoln City.

The former Fulham man starred in 2020-21, a season which saw Michael Appleton’s side reach the play-off final in League One, being defeated by Blackpool at Wembley after occupying the automatic promotion spots for large parts of the season. Edun registered one goal and six assists in 41 League One appearances that season.

On Deadline Day, the versatile defender moved to Lancashire, joining Championship side Blackburn Rovers having only made 14 league starts across two seasons at Ewood Park.

Writer’s View

During his last stint in the third tier, Edun was one of the top performers in the division before earning a move higher up the divisions. Now 25, Edun has plenty to prove after failing to make an impact at Ewood Park.

He would join amongst several top-end League One performers that have switched to Dean Holden’s side as Charlton look to mount their first serious promotion charge since relegation three years ago.

This move makes sense for both the club and the player. Edun still has his best years ahead of him and will value the prospect of regular game time at a side with ambitions of promotion to the Championship.
