QPR Set To Make Double Transfer Move

QPR are expected to announce the signings of free agents Asmir Begović and Lewis Wing in the next couple of days, according to journalist Darren Witcoop.

Manager Gareth Ainsworth is looking to reinvigorate his side following their poor end of season form last year and both players will be welcomed additions at Loftus Road.

The R’s have already made three signings this summer, but will be wanting to bring a few more names through the door in order to be competitive in the forthcoming season. There have however been plenty of significant departures this summer from Loftus Road, most recently goalkeeper Seny Dieng who joined fellow Championship side Middlesbrough last week. Ainsworth has been on the lookout for a goalkeeper, and it now seems that he has found his man.

Begović has been without a club since departing Premier League outfit Everton earlier in the month, however he has been spotted training with fellow London side AFC Wimbledon. Although now aged 36, Begovic still seems to have a couple more years in him and he will bring welcomed experience to a struggling QPR side. The Bosnian has made 256 appearances in the Premier League for five different clubs, those being ; Portsmouth, Stoke, Chelsea, Bournemouth and most recently Everton. The 36-year-old has played at the highest level for both club and country, making five appearances during his time at Chelsea in the Champions League as well as winning the Premier League. Begovic would also play a key part in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s 2014 World Cup run, starting in each of the three group games.

The goalkeeper is not the only player who the R’s are expected to sign, with the arrival of midfielder Lewis Wing also looking imminent. The 28-year-old has spent the last 18 months with Wycombe Wanderers, where he played under manager Gareth Ainsworth during that time. The two look likely to link up again, and off of the back of a season which saw the midfielder score nine times as well as provide five assists, Wing will be expected to take the step back up to the Championship in his stride. With 100 Championship appearances already to his name for Middlesbrough and Rotherham, the attacking midfielder is already proven in the second tier, something that Ainsworth will no doubt like. Having rejected a new contract with Wycombe, Wing is available on a free and now looks set to reunite with his former manager.

What will the signings bring?

With the number one spot vacant at Loftus Road currently, Begovic looks the ideal candidate to step into the position. He is just what QPR need and his experience will play a huge factor in the forthcoming year. The Bosnian does look like a short term option, with the R’s potentially looking at bringing a younger keeper in next season. As for Wing, he will be looking to once again prove himself as a Championship level player. QPR seems a suitable landing spot for the Englishman and his relationship with boss Gareth Ainsworth will certainly help his transition. The 28-year-old will be in and around the first team, and would be a key player in the midfield if he’s able to replicate his form for Wycombe last season.

Writer’s view

Both of the signings look good options for QPR, and both provide solutions for problems in the squad. Plenty have already written of the club as well as Ainsworth for the forthcoming season and they will be looking to prove the doubters wrong. Following a dismal end to the 2022/23 season, Ainsworth will be hoping that his side can get off to a good start this year and challenge in an ultra competitive Championship.
