Wycombe Wanderers Defender Targeted By Legendary Former Boss

QPR manager Gareth Ainsworth is looking to raid his former club this summer as he targets Wycombe Wanderers defender Chris Forino, according to West London Sport.

The Chairboys are reportedly reluctant to sell the 23-year-old, who is entering the final year of his current deal at Adams Park.

Who is Chris Forino?

The towering defender earned a professional deal at Wycombe Wanderers following a trial whilst studying at Loughborough University.

Making his debut in November 2021, he would win the Fans’ Player of the Month award for December.

The 6ft 3″ St Lucian was a product of the Brentford academy, before embarking on spells at the likes of Cheshunt, Colchester United and Wingate & Finchley.

Whilst also eligible to play for both England and Italy, in December 2022, he pledged his allegiance to the Caribbean country.

Why is Ainsworth targeting Forino?

Experienced defender Leon Balogun is expected to return to Rangers after his 12-month deal expired, having been signed by former QPR boss and current Rangers manager Michael Beale.

Rob Dickie completed a permanent move to Bristol City for an undisclosed fee earlier in the window, whilst continuing fitness issues for Jake Clarke-Salter have led to the 50-year-old looking to strengthen his options in defence.

Despite the sales of Dickie and goalkeeper Seny Dieng, it is not believed the Hoops are in a strong financial position should Wycombe decide to hold out.

Ainsworth was a huge admirer of Forino during their period together in Buckinghamshire, earmarking him for a move up the pyramid last year.

Speaking to Bucks Free Press in February 2022, the two-time League One Manager of the Month, said:

“He is an all-round player that hasn’t been touched in his younger years.

“He is a raw, what you see is what you get, type of defender is Chris Forino. He just loves defending.

“I think he has got more steps in him for the Championship and Premier League as I think he has a great chance.”

Writer’s View

Forino has emerged as Ainsworth’s top target as a replacement for Dickie, whilst I suspect he will look to a more experienced figure to fill the gap left by Balogun.

It makes sense to approach one of his former players as he will begin to shape the squad to fit his typically more direct style of football, with Forino’s physicality also making him a threat from attacking set-pieces.
