Charlton Athletic Among Sides Eyeing Up Championship Defender

Charlton Athletic are one of a number of clubs that are keeping tabs on Blackburn Rovers left-back Tayo Edun after being told he can leave the club, according to journalist Darren Witcoop.

The 25-year-old, who has also appeared for Lincoln City in League One, has been omitted from Jon Dahl Tomasson’s pre-season trip to Austria after being told he is free to leave the Ewood Park outfit this summer.

Who is Tayo Edun?

Coming up through the youth ranks at Fulham, Edun would make his debut for the West London side in August 2016 against Leyton Orient in a League Cup match, in which Fulham would run out 3-2 winners at Brisbane Road.

The left-back would leave the club on a season-long loan in August 2018, joining Ipswich Town for the 18/19 campaign. After scoring on his debut in a 2-2 draw against Blackburn Rovers, Edun would only make seven appearances for the Tractor Boys before being recalled from his loan in late December following an eye injury.

After only making seven competitive appearances in the first-team picture at Fulham, the 25-year-old would leave the club permanently in January 2020 to sign for League One side Lincoln City. In one-and-a-half years in Lincolnshire, Edun made 64 appearances for the Imps, scoring three goals and assisting nine times before leaving the LNER Stadium to move to Championship outfit Blackburn Rovers in August 2021.

During his two-year stay at Ewood Park, the defender has made a total of 34 appearances for the club, including a difficult 22/23 campaign in which saw Edun only make eight Championship appearances in a season which saw Rovers miss out on a playoff place by the skin of their teeth.

Charlton strengthening

As reported by Darren Witcoop, League One side Charlton Athletic are one of many clubs that are keeping an eye on the 25-year-olds’ situation at Blackburn Rovers, with Edun being told he is free to leave Ewood Park.

If the left-back was to make the switch to The Valley, Edun could be joining the likes of goalkeeper Harry Isted, defender Lloyd George and striker Alfie May who have all made the move to sign for Charlton over the summer.

The Addicks finished the 22/23 League One campaign in tenth place, picking up 16 victories in 46 league games as well as massing 62 points in a season in which they finished 15 points behind Peterborough United in the final playoff place.

Writer’s View

Tayo Edun’s situation at Blackburn Rovers has been made clear but if he was to go on and sign for Charlton Athletic, I think it would be an impressive piece of business on the whole.

Even though the left-back has been in and out of the team at Ewood Park, he is someone who already has a lot of experience playing in League One during his time at Lincoln City, so he is someone who is no stranger to the league.

I think this will be a real coup for Dean Holden’s side if Charlton was to get the move over the line, adding to what is looking like a brilliant transfer window so far alongside the captures of Harry Isted and Alfie May.
