MLS side Minnesota United have reportedly agreed a deal in principle to sign Tranmere Rovers defender Ethan Bristow, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke from Football Insider.
The full back has been with Tranmere for just over a year, joining the club after being released from boyhood club Reading at the end of the 21/22 season. He played a big role for Tranmere last season starting all 46 fourth tier matches, grabbing one goal and two assists along the way.
Who is Ethan Bristow?
The 21-year-old, Maidenhead born defender was a product of the Reading FC Academy working his way through the youth categories, eventually making it to the first team where he made six appearances for the Royals. In 2022, he made the switch to League Two Tranmere Rovers in search of more first team minutes, which he has certainly achieved.
He was one of few players to play in every game in League Two last season and demonstrated his robust nature in defence. His contract with Tranmere ends in 2024, meaning Tranmere would most likely demand some sort of fee to let him move further afield to the MLS.
What does this mean for Tranmere?
Bristow’s potential departure could mean that Ian Dawes and technical director Nigel Adkins go in search of another full back to replace the 21-year-old with the same quality. The club finished 12th last term and will be looking to push for promotion in the upcoming season even if Bristow does depart.
Writer’s View
A move to Minnesota United for Ethan Bristow is certainly a different one, especially considering the stage he’s at in his career as well as playing in all 46 League Two games last season.
In my opinion, it’s a unique and unexpected move for Bristow but maybe it can help him gain experiences that other League Two players won’t have experienced should he eventually decide to move back to England.
