Plymouth Argyle To Land 22-Year-Old From Premier League Outfit

Championship newcomers Plymouth Argyle are in advanced talks to sign Everton defender Lewis Gibson, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke from Football Insider.

The Home Park outfit, who won the League One title with 101 points last season, are set to beat several EFL sides to secure the services of the 22-year-old, with his current deal at Goodison Park having recently expired, meaning the defender is now a free agent.

Who is Lewis Gibson?

Coming through the academy at Newcastle United, defender Lewis Gibson would make the move to Everton in July 2017 in which during his time at Goodison Park, the 22-year-old has failed to make a single first-team appearance.

Numerous loan spells followed, with his first one coming at League One Fleetwood Town for the second half of the 2019/20 season. During his short time at Highbury, Gibson made nine appearances in total for the Cods as the club finished the league campaign 6th in the table, losing to eventual winners Wycombe Wanderers in the playoffs.

Gibson’s next temporary move would see him join Reading on a season-long loan for the 2020/21 season. In the end, Gibson would make 13 total appearances for the Royals in the Championship as they finished the season sitting in 7th and missing out on a place for the playoffs.

A six-match stint on loan at Sheffield Wednesday followed before the defender would make the switch to Bristol Rovers for the 2022/23 season, reuniting with boss Joey Barton. Gibson would appear 33 times for the Gas throughout the campaign, scoring once as Bristol Rovers finished 17th in their return season in League One.

Gearing up for the Championship

Following a campaign which saw Plymouth Argyle win the League One title with a total of 101 points and winning 31 out of their 46 league games last term, the Pilgrims are set to embark on a Championship campaign for the first time since the 2009/10 season.

Boss Michael Schumacher has been quick to bolster his squad ahead of the new campaign, especially in defence by bringing in the likes of Spanish defender Julio Pleguezuelo from Dutch side FC Twente, as well as completing the signing of full-back Kaine Kesler-Hayden on loan from Aston Villa.

Writer’s View

For me, Gibson to Plymouth Argyle seems like a solid signing. He is now at an age where he needs to be playing regular football for a club permanently and for the past few seasons, he’s been doing that. At 22 years of age, he has plenty of EFL experience behind him with the previous loan spells he’s been on.

As the Pilgrims are looking to add to their squad ahead of their Championship return, it’s important they ensure they bring in the right players in order to be competitive in the second division, something I think they are doing really well so far.
