Plymouth Argyle Have Offer For League One Midfielder Rejected

Championship newcomers Plymouth Argyle have had an offer to sign highly-rated Burton Albion midfielder Terry Taylor rejected, according to Pete O’Rourke from Football Insider.

22-year-old Taylor, who is also of interest to clubs like Cardiff City and Hibernian, is out of contract at the Pirelli Stadium at the end of June with a move away looking likely, although due to his age, Burton will be entitled to a compensation fee if he was to depart.

Who is Terry Taylor?

Born in Scotland but represents Wales at international level, midfielder Terry Taylor started his career in the Aberdeen youth system before moving to join Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2019, in which he spent one and a half years on the books of Molineux.

During his spell at Wolves, Taylor made the switch to Grimsby Town on loan for the 2020/21 season under the management of Ian Holloway, in which he made a total of 14 appearances for the Mariners before being recalled in the winter transfer window with his game time at Blundell Park limited.

In the same transfer window, Taylor would leave Wolves permanently to sign for League One side Burton Albion, where he has since made 69 appearances for the Brewers and has quickly been one of the most consistent and in-demand midfielders in the EFL following constant impressive performances.

In the 2022/23 campaign, the Welsh midfielder went on to make 26 appearances for Burton with the club finishing the season 15th in League One, with Taylor’s season coming to an early end in February due to an ankle injury which required surgery.

The 22-year-old has also represented Wales at international level, appearing 11 times for the under-21 side and scoring two goals for his country in the process.

A wanted man

Welsh midfielder Taylor has been of interest to several teams for some time now, with now Premier League side Sheffield United rumoured to be interested in signing the 22-year-old back in January.

With his contract at the Pirelli Stadium set to expire with a move away looking more likely by the day, Taylor could potentially be on the move this summer with the aforementioned Cardiff City and Hibernian understood to be interested in making a move to sign one of League One’s top prospects.

However, it is Steven Schumacher’s Plymouth Argyle that has made their move with an offer to sign the Welshman despite the offer being turned down as they look to gear up ahead of the upcoming Championship campaign after winning the League One title last season.

Writer’s View

It’s clear to see that Terry Taylor has been one of the standout and promising midfielders in League One for quite a long period of time now, with a move away looking likely with his contract set to expire at the Brewers unless something can be agreed.

Plymouth have made a move to sign the 22-year-old midfielder which has been rejected but let’s say if they were to come back in with another offer and they manage to get it over the line, I think it would be a very impressive signing. The same goes for other clubs that attempt to gain his signature.

With Taylor’s age as well, there is still plenty of developing to do on his side as he looks to make that next step up to enhance his career. Whether that is with Plymouth Argyle or another club for that matter, remains to be seen.
