Portsmouth are in advanced talks to sign released Cardiff City winger Gavin Whyte, as revealed in an exclusive from Football League World.
Cardiff City announced the winger would be departing the Championship club when his deal expires this month and Whyte has been a known target for Pompey for some time, even before this news. With Whyte on the lookout for a new club over the past few weeks, it has been revealed that John Mousinho is pushing to get a deal over the line, with the club and Whyte’s representatives in ‘advanced talks’ over a move for the wide man.
The winger was a former teammate of current boss John Mousinho and the Portsmouth boss will be hoping he can utilise that connection in his efforts to bring his former Oxford United teammate to the South Coast. Whyte’s form with the U’s saw him earn himself a move to the Welsh capital for a seven-figure fee, but it did not go to plan, failing to establish himself as a regular and scoring just once.
A host of clubs have been linked with a move for Whyte this summer with his availability for free, but Pompey have always been confident of securing the signature of the 28-cap Northern Ireland international’s signature ahead of their rivals for his signing, with his former club even being named as one of the teams interested in his services.
Since joining Cardiff City in 2019, the Irishman has only managed 45 appearances for the Bluebirds, scoring only once in those appearances. His stellar form for Oxford United saw him make 36 appearances for the U’s, scoring seven goals and he returned to the club on loan in 2021, making a further 31 appearances, scoring once in that time.
Internationally, he has represented Northern Ireland on a number of occasions, his senior international debut saw him score his first goal for his country after just 108 seconds in a 3-0 victory over Israel. He has scored five goals in 28 appearances at international level.
Portsmouth have already made six signings this summer and have been active in the market for free transfers so far and are in pursuit of another free agent in former loanee Di’Shon Bernard.

Whyte is a strong acquisition for the club, should they get it over the line. John Mousinho’s connection with the winger could play a key part here and in terms of making signings off the free-agent market, Pompey have been smart so far with some strong names already joining up at Fratton Park.
