Former Plymouth Argyle Man Finds New EFL Club

Ex Plymouth Argyle midfielder Ryan Broom has found himself a brand new club with Fleetwood Town announcing his signature today, over on the official Fleetwood Town club website.

Fleetwood further confirmed that they’d tied down their new man to a two-year-old with the Cods, the 26-year-old joining the Lancashire club after a mixed spell back at Cheltenham Town.

Now, Broom will be hoping he can get back to his best under Scott Brown’s guidance with the Cods – Broom arguably becoming a journeyman in recent years, relocating to club after club.

He’ll hope that Fleetwood can be a permanent destination for some time to come, a place where he can recapture his form and excite the Highbury Stadium faithful.

Who Is Ryan Broom?

Broom started his career at Bristol Rovers, the Welshman making 13 overall appearances for the Gas in the infancy of his career.

However, after loan moves away to Taunton Town, Bath City and Eastleigh in non-league, Broom would depart Rovers for Cheltenham Town where he began to show off his talents.

The 2019-20 season for the Robins saw Cheltenham Town finish inside the playoffs but ultimately promotion didn’t follow suit. Broom will still remember that campaign fondly from an individual perspective though, the 26-year-old midfielder finishing the season as Cheltenham’s top scorer with eight strikes to his name in League Two.

This positive season personally for Broom saw the Welshman join Peterborough United in the division above, but this move could be labelled as a disappointment for the former Robins player.

He would only manage 15 appearances for Posh, scoring a solitary goal in a brief spell in Cambridgeshire. He would be shipped out on loan, finding his mojo again away from Peterborough United with Plymouth Argyle.

Broom would score four goals in 48 appearances for Argyle during the 2020-21 season, the Pilgrims finishing one position shy of the third tier playoffs that campaign.

Another spell back at Cheltenham Town did follow before this recent move to Fleetwood Town was confirmed, Broom presumably eager to go again ahead of next season in League One with the Cod Army.

Fleetwood Town Next Season

With most of the news surrounding the Cod Army dictated by developments that their former chairman Andy Pilley has recently been convicted over fraud and money laundering charges, signings such as Ryan Broom should hopefully turn attention back to matters strictly on the football pitch.

Scott Brown enjoyed a reasonably successful first season in charge as manager of Fleetwood Town, Brown’s men finishing in a satisfactory 13th position at the end of the 46-game campaign.

The Cod Army boss will hope that his side can push on with signings such as Ryan Broom in the door, alongside personnel such as Jayden Stockley, Jack Marriott and the experienced Josh Vela entering the fray last season.

The Lancashire Coast club have routinely punched above their weight in the third tier – the once non-league minnows a regular mainstay now in League One – and so they’ll hope they can exceed expectations next campaign again and finish higher than mid-table.

Writer’s View

It’s fair to say Ryan Broom has had a career of various ups and downs, a major up for Broom coming during the 2019-20 season where he was an instrumental to Cheltenham’s promotion push then followed by a major down when he failed to settle at Peterborough United.

Broom will have a point to prove at Fleetwood, coming off the back of an uninspiring few years returning to Cheltenham Town – the 26-year-old only managing two goals last season for Cheltenham before relocating to Lancashire.

It remains to be seen what version of Broom shows up at the Highbury Stadium, fans of Fleetwood hoping that he can impress in a Cod Army shirt.
