Stevenage Confirm Statement League One Signing

Stevenage is set to sign Peterborough United defender Nathan Thompson, after agreeing to terms with the player, as confirmed by the club

The 32-year-old has spent the last four seasons with Posh in the Championship and League One, and is now set to move to the newly promoted side. A leader with close to 400 appearances in his career, the former Swindon icon will be a knowledgeable player for Boro.

Who Is Nathan Thompson?

The well-experienced defender has been a consistent performer over the years, with a wealth of experience as a captain.

Starting his career at Swindon Town, Thompson rose up the ranks at his boyhood where he played 186 times for them. Winning League Two and narrowly missing out on the chance of promotion to the Championship with the Robins, the defender moved to fellow League One club Portsmouth. Spending just two seasons with Pompey, Thompson was impactful from the right-back position with 10 assists during his 79 games with the club.

Making the switch to Peterborough in 2019, Thompson split his time at both centre-back and right-back, and was a key part of the Posh’s previous promotion and playoff run this season.

How Will He Fit?

With Stevenage playing a back three/five in their promotion-winning season, Thompson should fit perfectly into the system. Able to play as the right centre-back or on the right, the defender should slot straight into Steve Evans’ side. Great on the ball and a fantastic leader, Thompson will vastly improve an already impressive defensive back-line.

What’s Been Said:

Speaking to the club after the confirmation of his signing, Thompson said:

“I’ve had good discussions with the manager about what we are looking to achieve this season”, the defender said upon signing.

“Having played against Stevenage numerous times, it’s always been a tough game. Now, I’m looking forward to being on the other side and seeing what we can achieve”

Writer’s View

I am a huge fan of Nathan Thompson and think this is a great piece of business by Boro. With the ability to play multiple positions in Evans’ system, Thompson will bring the experience of League One football to Stevenage and form a great partnership with League Two Team of the Season defender Carl Piergianni.

A gritty leader with legs still in him, I would compare Thompson’s game to a Football League’s Cesar Azpilicueta.
