League One Crisis Club Face Further Sanction

Wigan Athletic have today been placed under a transfer embargo, due to the late/non-payment of player and staff salaries.

It has gone from bad to worse for the Latics in recent weeks, having already been deducted eight points before the start of the 2023-24 season. The off-field problems continue to mount at the DW Stadium and the future of the club is not certain as of yet.

The announcement of the embargo comes on the same day the EFL announced various changes to their regulations. Wigan had already been charged with breaching Rule 17 of the EFL Regulations, in relation to tax payments to HMRC, this has now been updated to include any payment or debt defaults to the HMRC within two days.

Furthering this, the ‘30-day rule’ has also been added to the list of regulations, and this is what has placed the Latics under this embargo.

What is the 30-day rule?

The EFL Statement regarding the regulation changes and the 30-day rule, reads ;

“The non-payment of HMRC debt has been added as a trigger of Regulation 52.6, so Clubs who accumulate 30 days of late payments in a 12-month period will be unable to sign a player for a fee or any consideration for three full transfer windows. The amendment to the 30-Day Rule also provides for Clubs to self-report late payment of any debt covered by Regulation 52.6, plus a right of appeal for Clubs triggering the 30-Day Rule.”

How does this affect Wigan?

Due to the club accumulating more than 30 days of late payments, they have broken the 30-day rule. The transfer embargo means that Wigan can no longer sign players from other teams although they can however still sign players on loan, or those without a club. In relation to loan signings, they cannot pay any sort of fees to acquire the players nor additional wages on top of what the player receives from their parent club. The Latics also cannot register any more players, once there are 23 ‘professional standing’ players at the club according to the EFL Embargo Reporting Service. At the time of writing, Wigan have 19 contracted players and have also offered two players extended deals, meaning that the current squad could be up to 21 players.

That means that there will be very little activity at the DW Stadium this summer, signing free agents will be incredibly hard given the situation that the club are in and therefore loan deals may be the option that Wigan go for.

How did they do last season?

Finishing at the foot of the Championship table resulted in Wigan’s relegation to League One. Due to failing to meet the terms of contracts and paying players and staff, the club were deducted three points. However this wouldn’t have mattered as even without the points deduction they would’ve still finished bottom, and seven points from safety.

Writer’s View

I would not want to be a Wigan fan at the minute with the current state that the club find themselves in. They’ll face an even harder task of survival now given the transfer embargo on top of their eight-point deduction. It wouldn’t be out of question to see them fall straight down through the division and although on paper the squad should fight for the top half, all of the off-field problems will no doubt have a huge affect on everyone at the club.
