League One Crisis Club Delay Player Wages

Reports have emerged that Wigan Athletic have apparently once again failed to play player wages on time.
Paul Hendrick from Wigan tweeted that some non playing staff and Under 23 players have received their salaries, but the first team squad are again waiting for wages to hit their accounts.

The Latics, relegated from The Championship, will start the new League One season with a minus eight points penalty, after two earlier instances of failing to pay their players on time this summer.

So far there has been no comment from the EFL regarding the apparent new delay in paying salaries, but similar problems have been swiftly met with points deductions for the Latics. The first deduction, 3 points, in March, played a major part in ensuring Wigan went straight back down to the third tier after promotion in 2021/22.

The news will be of major concern to Latics fans who have made their feelings towards owner, Abdulrahman Al-Jasmi who bought the club in 2021.
Fans have called for the Latics to be put up for sale amid fears for the long term future of the club.

What Was Said

Paul Kendrick revealed the news on his Twitter account and said;

Been told Wigan Athletic staff have been paid along with the club’s Under-23s…but the senior squad remains unpaid. Assurances have been made it will be today…but of course they’ve been made before. Appalling state of affairs.’

Kendric later tweeted an update on the situation which read;

Just been told not all non-playing staff have been paid…obviously hard to check if every single member of staff has been paid…but important to make that correction.

That we’re even having to clarify this is a damning indictment on current events.”

Latics fans must dread checking social media right now for news of their stricken club. Relegation from The Championship now looks like the least of their worries as further wage delays may mean that surviving in League One will be incredibly difficult.

The EFL will be of course, monitoring the situation very closely and if player wages have again been paid late, they will again be surely forced to step in .
