After heartbreak in the League One playoffs, Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has reassured fans the club will look to re-invest money this transfer window, with quotes from Peterborough Telegraph.
Posh narrowly missed out on a trip to Wembley after a devastating penalty defeat to eventual winners Sheffield Wednesday earlier in the month, and are now expecting a high turnaround in players this summer. Despite the potential departures, the chairman is still ambitious about the squad for next season.
What Did Posh Achieve This Season?
Peterborough started the League One campaign with a hot start under manager Grant McCann, however, a poor run through December led to his departure and the return of fan favourite Darren Ferguson.
Filling in as Posh manager for a fourth time, Ferguson led a late-season comeback to secure playoff football on the final day of the season. Matching up against Sheffield Wednesday, Boro blew the historic team away with a 4-0 victory in the first leg, however a 5-1 defeat in the following game caused heartbreak as they remained in the third tier of English football.
Surprise Departures?
Following their defeat in the playoffs, Posh surprised fans when they released their retained list. Letting experienced defender Nathan Thompson walk, Posh have also announced they have transfer listed nine players, with top goalscorer Jonson Clarke-Harris among the names available for transfer.
Youth Is Key
With a set of experienced players set to leave the club this summer, MacAnthony and Ferguson described how they intend to make the most of their youth setup. Posh’s youth teams are all coming off successful seasons, with the pair preferring to use their resourcing instead of taking Premier League youngsters in for work experience.

Speaking to the Peterborough Telegraph, MacAnthony shed light on the plans he has for the club in the transfer window.
“Every person at our club is as ambitious as they have always been, MacAnthony said. “We are not suddenly sticking a load of teenagers into our team and, as always, we will be buying players this summer.
“We are all looking forward to shaping the squad for the new campaign.”
Head coach Ferguson followed up with commentary on the kind of players that may be joining the squad for the next campaign:
“We’ll add one or two experienced players. We will need that, especially if we’re going to be losing a large group of players with experience.
“We will aim to be competitive to a degree, but we want to be developing our own players as well.”
Writer’s View
What both the chairman and manager said in this recent interview is very telling, as the club aims to develop their youth in an attempt to replace talent. This approach could help tremendously with minimising costs, however, can be a longer-term approach.
Despite this, Posh’s academy has enjoyed silverware this past season and if a few players can make the jump to the first team, it should allow the club to invest in more valuable players elsewhere.
