Cheltenham Town’s Liam Sercombe’s future is in the balance, with multiple League One and League Two clubs interested in his services, according to journalist Jon Palmer.
The experienced midfielder has been a dominant player in the middle of the field for the Robins for the last few years, however, his future is in doubt with the Englishmen’s contract expiring this summer. The League One club are said to be keen on retaining the player but will have to fight off competition, with no suiters being mentioned at this moment.
Who Is Liam Sercombe?
Sercombe is a well-experienced midfielder with a playing career that spans 15 years and counting. Starting his time at Exeter, the 33-year-old made over 250 appearances for the Grecians, where he experienced promotion and relegations with the club. Making the switch to fellow League Two club Oxford United after eight seasons with Exeter, he started on fire with 17 goals in his first season.
Helping the U’s secure promotion with his goals from midfield, Sercombe moved to rivals Bristol Rovers during the prime of his career. Making over 100 appearances with the Gas, Sercombe again provided contributions in the final third, with 36 goal contributions over three seasons.
Can He Still Contribute?
Despite entering his 30s, the midfielder’s goals may have slowed down but he is still a reliable player in the centre of the pitch. With three straight seasons of at least 40 appearances for the Robins, Sercombe has become an influential leader that helped the club win League Two in 2021.
Now getting closer to the twilight of his career after crossing 500 appearances, the former Exeter icon still has services that will be useful for many EFL clubs.
Writer’s View
Cheltenham’s summer transfer window is an important one this year, with arguably their two best players being eyed up. With Alfie May’s future still up in the air, securing Sercombe seems like a crucial move for the Robins. The midfielder has shown no signs of slowing down the last few seasons despite his age and offers so much in the middle. With the club keen on resigning him, Sercombe should get a pick of clubs on where he will be playing next season.
