Birmingham City are ready to make a £2 million swoop for Wolves defender Dion Sanderson, according to journalist Alan Nixon.
Championship side Birmingham City are reportedly ready to make an offer to sign 23-year-old Sanderson on a permanent deal after having the defender on loan with the club two times previously, including last season, where he made 31 appearances for the Midlands club.
Who Is Dion Sanderson
Sanderson came up through the Wolves academy system and made his debut for the Premier League club in an EFL Cup fixture against Aston Villa in 2019. He was sent out on loan later that season to Cardiff City, where he went on to play ten times.
His next loan spell came in League One and it was a fairly successful one with Sunderland, where he made 26 appearances, however, a back injury meant he missed out on their unsuccessful play-off campaign, which saw Lincoln City beat them to a place at Wembley.
He earned his way back up to the Championship with loan spells at Birmingham and QPR during the 21/22 season before rejoining Birmingham on loan last season going on to make 31 appearances.
What’s been said?
Alan Nixon reported that Sanderson could be on his way back to Birmingham, with Wolves wanting a fee of £2 million for the defender, due to two years being left to run on his current deal with the Premier League club.
Birmingham manager John Eustace is clearly a big fan of the player and has previously made it clear that they would be interested in the opportunity of a permanent deal, and this would be a big statement of intent from new ownership if they could fend off other clubs to bring back the former loanee.
Writer’s View
Sanderson is a player that I’ve always liked, he’s very versatile and a top defender at Championship level. £2 million is a decent fee, but there is also room for re-sale value in the future with Sanderson still only 23. If I was a Birmingham City fan, I’d be extremely happy with this news.
