League One Side Beat Scottish Giants And Championship Clubs To Highly-Rated Defender

Shrewsbury Town has announced the signing of young defender Michael Parker, following his trail with the club towards the final weeks of the 2022/23 season, as confirmed by the club

The young 18-year-old has attracted interest from a host of clubs, however, turned down the likes of Rangers, Stoke City and West Bromwich Albion to join the Shrews. The versatile defender will get to work with the League One club in pre-season, with his 6’4 frame giving him a high ceiling of potential.

Who Is Michael Parker?

The youngster was a part of Huddersfield’s youth setup, however, spent the last few weeks of the past season with Shrewsbury’s under-18 and first team. With great athleticism and versatility to play multiple positions, Parker impressed throughout training and has now signed for the club on a permanent basis.

Where Will He Fit?

Still at a young age and will lots of impressive attributes, Parker has the potential to play in the centre of the left side of defence. Starting his trail with the youth team and impressing enough to train with the first team come the end of the season, the left-footed defender should get an opportunity to play a part with the League One club early on.

Despite bigger clubs interested in his services, Parker should see a clearer path to the first team at Shrewsbury, and could be an impressive contributor to the club.

What’s Been Said:

Speaking to the club following the confirmation of his signing, Parker spoke about his style of play and relationship with the club.

Parker said: “I’m very very happy. As soon as I came in I was welcomed a lot by all the players and staff. After my first training session, I had a good feeling about the place as well so I’m delighted to get it over the line.

“I would describe myself as a ball-playing centre-back. I’m very athletic, fast, quick, strong and I like to get on the ball and play.

“We discussed my pathway to the first team. He told me that if I impressed I’d be guaranteed a chance and I have a lot of faith in myself.

“And with the track record Shrewsbury have with young players and graduating academy players to play in the first team, that was really pleasing for me.”

Academy Director David Longwell followed up about where he will fit with the team.

Longwell said: “This is a fantastic signing for us and thanks to the quick work of Gary Wharton (head of academy recruitment), we got in touch with Michael and brought him to Shrewsbury early on.

“He trained with the first team and we were all really impressed with him so we’re delighted he’s signed on for next season!

“He’s quick, left-footed; he’s a big lad at 6’4 and he can play as a left-back, centre-back or left wing-back.”

Writer’s View

Interestingly, Parker chose the Shrews over the likes of Championship clubs and Rangers, however, it’s clear he enjoyed his trial with the club last season and sees a path for himself. With a lack of current experience, contributing towards the club may take its time, but with a high ceiling of potential, Parker could be a great free signing when looking back in years to come.
