League One Clubs Circle Crewe Alexandra Star

League One Portsmouth have joined the chase for out-of-contract Crewe Alexandra star Dan Agyei, as the likelihood of him signing a new deal with the Railwaymen looks less and less likely, according to journalist Darren Witcoop via Twitter.

Agyei was a star player for the Railwaymen this season, scoring 16 goals for the club and earning himself the Players Player Of The Year award. He has been one of the most consistent players for the club and worked extremely hard, that effort was rewarded as a new deal was placed on the table for him, but manager Lee Bell admitted earlier today that it is looking unlikely he will sign on for any longer in South Cheshire.

With the deal looking unrealistic to be extended as the forward’s 18-month tenure with the Railwaymen comes to a close, League One clubs such as Portsmouth and Burton Albion have been circling in an attempt to sign the 25-year-old on for next season. Portsmouth are seeking promotion to the Championship once again as they continue their rebuild from a fall from grace which saw them drop to League Two from the Premier League. Meanwhile, Burton Albion secured another season of safety in the third tier and they look to build on that and add some more attacking options to their squad. League Two rivals are also interested in the player as playoff semi-finalists Bradford City also look to bolster the firepower they already hold in Andy Cook, who recently signed a new deal to stay on with Mark Hughes’ Bantams side.

Coming through the ranks of AFC Wimbledon’s youth, Agyei attracted the interest of a number of top-flight clubs in 2014/15 as he bagged 35 goals for the under-21s. Despite the interest, he would join the Championship, as Burnley secured his signature in 2015, he only made three appearances in the club’s 2016/17 Premier League season and loan spells with Coventry, Walsall and Blackpool would also fail to prove fruitful for the forward.

His time with Oxford United would not bear much success either, as he managed to score just 11 goals in 93 appearances. Despite his poor return for the U’s, Crewe would take a chance on him in January 2022 as he joined for an undisclosed fee.

“The lad did brilliantly for us and I know he has got a lot of options. I’ve had a lot of people contacting us about him and his character.

“We obviously want him to be a Crewe player next season, but it’s not realistic.”

Agyei has proven himself with Crewe, but as Bell has said, it appears to be unrealistic that he remains with the club any longer. With that being said, Portsmouth would be the most attractive option for the forward, not only would he be joining a League One club, but he would also be joining a club that stands a very good chance of promotion next season.
