Derby County Join The Queue For In Demand League One Star

Derby County have joined the race for in demand Cheltenham Town forward Alfie May, but face competition from a number of clubs, including Charlton Athletic and several other clubs, according to Gloucester Live’s Jon Palmer.

The Rams will be looking to bounce back and rebuild after a disappointing campaign last time out, as they narrowly missed out on a playoff place when they lost to the playoff winners Sheffield Wednesday on the final day of the regular season. And they will be boosted by the news of their embargo being lifted as they are now free to spend money in the summer transfer window ahead of their plans for next season.

And they have added Cheltenham Town forward Alfie May to their shopping list as the 29-year-old’s future hangs in the balance with one year remaining on his contract. The news of May’s availability has intrigued many clubs within the EFL, with a number of clubs linked from the Championship such as Birmingham City, down to League Two, where National League winners Wrexham were said to be interested in a move for the forward.

As his future hangs in the balance, it has been a tense affair for Cheltenham Town fans, with his final day goal said to be his swan song for the side he won the League Two title with. That final goal would be fitting if he were to join the club he is said to be most likely to sign for in Charlton Athletic, who were his opponents on the day he scored that goal. The situation is thought to be resolved within the week as suitors continue to circle to try and take their chance to acquire the Englishman.

Despite having a year on his contract remaining, the club will not feel pressured to sell their star, as they do hold the option to extend for a further year past that and they are thought to be holding out for a six-figure fee for what many Robins fans would call their talisman and that would be a remarkable return for the bargain price they got May for from Doncaster Rovers.

May joined in 2020 from Doncaster Rovers and helped lead the team to the League Two title that season, he went on to become a fan favourite breaking the club’s EFL scoring record, as he netted 48 goals across two seasons and 67 in all competitions. He has been part of a Cheltenham Town team that has secured the two highest finishes in the club’s history.

May has become a vital part of the Robins team, but at his age and with his form continuing the way it has, it would be wise for the side to cash in while they still have the opportunity to receive a fee for their talisman. And the potential return for May with little pressure to sell and clubs of a high calibre circling, it is a fantastic opportunity to make a profit and invest in the team to move forward.
