Oxford United Target Premier League Attacker

Oxford United are reportedly keen on making a move to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers winger Theo Corbeanu on loan for next season, according to journalist Darren Witcoop.

Corbeanu, who has previously played under current U’s boss Liam Manning whilst at MK Dons, could be available to sign as Wolves are expecting to send the winger out on loan for a fifth time next season.

Who is Theo Corbeanu?

Theo Corbeanu has been on the books at Wolves since 2018 but it was in October 2020 when he signed his first professional deal with the club after originally progressing through the youth ranks at Toronto FC back in his native Canada.

Becoming a regular on the bench since penning his professional deal with Wolves, Corbeanu would go on to make his Premier League debut for the club in a 2-0 away defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in May 2021, with the winger coming on as a second-half substitute.

Several loan spells for consistent game time for the 21-year-old winger would follow, with his first temporary spell away from Molineux would see Corbeanu end at Sheffield Wednesday. During his short time at Hillsborough, the Canadian would make 18 appearances for the Owls in total and went on to score two goals for the club, with his first goal in senior professional football coming in a 3-0 victory over Sunderland in November 2021.

Wolves would go on to cut Corbeanu’s loan spell in Sheffield short as he was recalled and sent to fellow League One side MK Dons, in which he made 17 appearances and found the back of the net once during his stint at Stadium MK.

This season, following spending the first half of the campaign at Championship Blackpool in which he went on to play 18 times for the Tangerines and recording three goals for the club, Corbeanu would eventually spend the second half of the season at German second division side Arminia Bielefeld, with the 21-year-old going on make 12 appearances for the German outfit in total.

Corbeanu has also represented Canada at international level, with the wide player earning seven caps for his country in which he has already netted two goals so far for his country.

Writer’s View

It’s clear to see from the off that Oxford cannot be in the same position as they were at the back end of the season going forward with their League One status very much on the line, with the summer approaching looking to be a good chance for the club to start rebuilding and repairing the cracks that were shown in the previous campaign.

The signing of Theo Corbeanu could potentially be a good start to the window for the U’s if the rumours come to fruition, with plenty of experience of playing in the Championship and League One already at the age of 21.

With Manning at the helm who has previously managed Corbeanu whilst the winger was on loan at MK Dons, it’s clear to see the Oxford boss knows him well and thinks he can add something to the team and if this rumour turns out to be true, it could represent an excellent piece of business in the early stages in the transfer window.
