Plymouth Argyle forward Niall Ennis is expected to join Championship side Blackburn following his contract expiration, according to reports from Lancashire Telegraph.
The 24-year-old’s contract expires with the Pilgrims this summer, after a season which saw him collect 21 goal contributions in all competitions. After helping Plymouth win League One and return to the Championship, Ennis has caught the eyes of many and is now expected to be in advance negotiations with Rovers.
Who Is Niall Ennis?
Starting his career at Wolverhampton Wanderers, the attacker has had numerous loans in the EFL before joining the League One Champions. After having his loan spell with Shrewsbury Town cut short due to a major injury, the Englishmen got his first taste of professional football with Doncaster Rovers.
Making 29 appearances in the league, Ennis delivered a respectable six goals and four assists in his first season as Rovers finished just outside the playoffs. Remaining in League One, the striker next joined Burton Albion on loan, however, signed for Plymouth in the January transfer window on a permanent deal.
Can He Make The Step Up?
Spending the last two and a half seasons with the Pilgrims, Ennis has played his entire career in the third tier of English football. During that time he has been a reliable contributor in the final third, however has seen a lot of action off the bench.
Starting 32 of his 63 league appearances over the last two seasons, his role with Argyle has been an efficient and successful one. Despite the lack of starts, Ennis has been one of the soon-to-be Championship side’s biggest threats, leading the champions in non-penalty goals.
Writer’s View
With Ennis being a free agent and having control of his destiny, it seems he will be making the move to a fellow rival in the same division of Plymouth. Despite working so well under Steven Schumacher’s system, it is interesting to see him gamble on himself for a bigger opportunity. Blackburn came whiskers away from fighting out in the playoffs this season, so this move may allow the attacker to get back with a Premier League club as he had in his early days.
