Manchester City coach Enzo Maresca is a new name linked with the vacant manager job at soon-to-be League One club Blackpool, according to reports from Alan Nixon.
The 43-year-old has most recently been a part of the coaching staff for the Blues’ potential treble-winning season and is now linked with numerous managerial jobs.
Who Is Enzo Maresca?
The Italian has a wealth of experience as a player and manager, featuring in over 500 games during his playing career and on the sideline.
Making his senior debut with West Bromwich Albion in 1998, the midfielder made 50 appearances with the midlands club before returning to Italy with Juventus. Signing for £4.3 million which was a club record sale for Albion, Maresca would win the Italian Champion (Serie A) during his time with the dominant Italian side.
His most successful spell as a player would come during his four years with Sevilla. Making 136 appearances for the Spanish club, the central midfielder had 29 goal contributions and won five trophies, including back-to-back UEFA Cups (Europe Leagues).
Is He Ready For The Step Up?
As a coach, Maresca has spent time in multiple roles with Sevilla and as assistant manager to Manuel Pellegrini during his time at West Ham.
While as a manager, the former AC Milan product spent a lone season in charge of Manchester City U23, where he won the Premier League 2 with the developmental squad. Succeeding in youth football, Maresca stepped up as manager for Serie B club Parma, however, was fired after just six months in charge, leading to his return with Pep Guardiola at the Citizens.
Writer’s View
The Italian has quite an impressive CV as both a player and coach during his time in England, however, it may be hard to tempt him away from the Premier League champions. Soon to be playing in League One, Blackpool may have bigger competitors who also want the former player.
Maresca has plenty of pros due to his links with multiple European clubs, but with just one senior managerial job ending in failure, the Tangerines won’t want the same to happen to them.
