Championship Clubs Target Plymouth Argyle Forward

Championship clubs Blackburn Rovers and Swansea City are both currently interested in Plymouth Argyle forward Niall Ennis as his deal comes to an end, according to Alan Nixon.

Ennis has been a mainstay in the team at Home Park making 38 appearances in League One this season, scoring 12 goals and providing six assists. Despite this, his contract is coming to an end and with no new deal agreed, he is set to become a free agent this summer. Ennis’ role in the team proved to be vital as Plymouth secured the title on the final day with a victory at Port Vale, while their competitors Ipswich struggled to a draw at Fleetwood Town. However, even though the 24-year-old is free to discuss terms with other clubs with his contract coming to a close, Argyle have reportedly offered a new contract to the striker which certainly complicates the situation for the Championship clubs.

Both Blackburn and Swansea will be keen to add reinforcements to their squads before the new season and both sides need a striker. Blackburn recently lost Ben Brereton Diaz as his contract came to an end and he agreed a deal to move on to Spanish side Villarreal this summer. Swansea will also be keen to add another striker to their ranks, Joel Piroe had a terrific campaign scoring 19 goals this season, but another striker could help the side take the next step towards the top flight. There is uncertainty within the Welsh side currently though, with Russell Martin currently one of the names favoured to take over at Southampton as they look to escape the Championship next season.

Niall Ennis

Wolverhampton born Ennis joined Plymouth in January 2021 from his boyhood club Wolverhampton Wanderers, since 2017 he had been out on three loan spells from Wolves, spending time with Shrewsbury, Doncaster and Burton Albion. This season at Home Park has been the season he has enjoyed his football the most, last season he made 25 appearances and provided four goals and four assists for the club as Plymouth finished three points shy of the playoff places.

After joining midway through the season in 2021, he would go on to make 24 appearances scoring six and earning one assist. This move would follow on from his loan spell which many could consider unsuccessful as he made just nine appearances for Burton Albion providing one assist. Much of his time with Shrewsbury could also be considered a disappointment as he played just one minute for the club after missing a large chunk of the season with a knee injury.

Ennis is a talented striker as shown by his numbers during his time in League One, not just with Plymouth. All of his options are certainly going to be attractive as Plymouth are a side on the rise and play some very attractive football under Steven Schumacher. However, Blackburn and Swansea are options that could also be attractive destinations for the forward as they are both sides that could be in the conversation for the top six next season. One thing is certain is that the ball is certainly in Ennis’ court for his future.
