Eastleigh have announced that Joe McDonnell has signed a new contract to extend his stay at the Silverlake Stadium.
The keeper, who has made 138 appearances for The Spitfires since joining in 2020 has had his best season to date, with his performances being rewarded with a new contract. Keeping the most clean sheets (17) in the league, Eastleigh will no doubt be wanting more of the same next season.
There were some questions to be answered about McDonnell’s whereabouts come the summer, given he had gone on a one-match emergency loan to Boreham Wood for the play-off semi finals. He featured in a game during which he saved a penalty alongside a string of good saves in a 3-2 loss after extra time to Notts County. All transfer rumours have now firmly been put to bed though after his contract extension with The Spitfires has been announced.
Who Is Joe McDonnell?
Hailing from Basingstoke, McDonnell honed his skills at a string of non-league sides. Having originally been with AFC Wimbledon, the keeper made 23 appearances for The Wombles in both League One and League Two, before joining Notts County on a free transfer in 2020. Making just six appearances in his time at Meadow Lane, he joined Eastleigh later on that summer where he has since cemented his role as number one. A proficient shot-stopper who also commands the area well, McDonnell stood out as one of the best keepers in the National League last season. Another good season with Eastleigh could interest some Football League clubs next summer.
What’s Been Said?
The club’s official website includes statements from both parties, who both seem thrilled with the deal:
McDonnell said: “It’s class! I’m looking forward to it. It’s time to get a little bit of rest in now but I’m sure when pre-season begins, I’ll be ready to go for what will hopefully be a positive season.”
Manager Lee Bradbury commented: “I’m delighted to have Joe commit himself to the club after he kept the joint-most clean sheets in the league. I believe he is one of the best goalkeepers in the league.”
Writer’s View
After proving himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the National League this season, McDonnell will no doubt want to keep progressing under Bradbury. Eastleigh will have hopes of them having an outside chance of reaching the play-offs next season, and the retention of McDonnell will play a big part in that. It is clear that the 29-year-old has ambitions to be a number one rather than a backup at a higher club and that is something that many will admire. Another strong season with the South-Eastern club will no doubt reward him next summer.
