Former Ipswich Town Starlet Announces Retirement

Former Football League midfielder Liam Trotter has retired at the age of 34, after the release of Chelmsford City’s retained list.

The ex-Ipswich Town, Millwall and Bolton Wanderers man has decided to hang up the boots following a playing career with over 500 appearances comes to an end after 17 years.

Who Is Liam Trotter?

The experienced midfielder has played for a host of clubs during his extensive career but started things off at Ipswich. After winning the FA Youth Cup with the Tractor Boys in 2005, Trotter was handed his first professional debut at the age of 17.

After a variety of loans and struggle to consistently make the team, the central midfielder left his boyhood club after 26 appearances to League One club Millwall. From there, the former player was far more consistent and featured 164 times with the Lions, where he would secure promotion to the Championship with them.

After four seasons with the London club, the Englishmen started to jump between clubs with spells at Bolton, Nottingham Forest and AFC Wimbledon.

Where Has He Been Recently?

After dropping down to the third tier of English football with Wimbledon, Trotter then made the move across the pond for a year with California team Orange County SC. Playing in the USL Championship for just a single season, the midfielder made 17 appearances while grabbing two assists.

Trotter soon returned to England, where he finished the last few years of his playing days in non-league football. Playing the past campaign with National League South side Chelmsford City, their season ended in heartbreak after losing in the playoff during extra-time, which will go down as Trotter’s last game in the sport.

Writer’s View

With a long playing career to look at, Trotter was an experienced player who certainly got around the blocks. Never spending more than five seasons at a club, the midfielder was a mainstay in the Football League with a lot of leadership.

While 34 may be a tad early to call it a day for some, the satisfaction to go out in a playoff final with Chelmsford was the fairy-tale ending Trotter was after.
