Sheffield Wednesday boss Darren Moore will wait until the conclusion of the League One playoffs to make his mind up on the futures of Sam Durrant and Ryan Galvin, in comments given to the Sheffield Star.
Both of the youngsters are the only players yet to have their futures decided at Hillsborough, with Darren Moore set to make a decision on whether they’ll remain at Wednesday very soon.
The pair haven’t really made an impact in the Owls first team up until now. Sam Durrant was – however – named on the bench versus Oxford United in League One back in April, as Darren Moore’s stuttering Wednesday side could only muster up a 1-1 draw at the Kassam.
Ryan Galvin has had more luck in terms of first team appearances away from Wednesday, featuring for both Gloucester City and Maidstone United when loaned out away from Hillsborough.
The latter of the loan spells in the National League even saw Galvin score, netting one of two strikes versus Eastleigh. Unfortunately for Maidstone, who would finish bottom of the division, they would lose 5-2 on the day.
It’ll be intriguing to see what Moore’s final decision is on both these players. With Durrant 21 years of age and Galvin a year older at 22, it is coming to a pivotal time in their careers where first team football is key to avoid falling to the wayside.
Are Both Players Highly Rated At Hillsborough?
Sam Durrant arrived at Hillsborough to make up the numbers in the under 21’s set-up. He came highly rated after a spell at Blackburn Rovers, the attacking midfielder scoring five goals in the under 18’s Premier League for his former employers way back in the 2018-19 season.
He hasn’t set the world alight in the men’s game as of yet though, limited to being named on the bench under Darren Moore a handful of times.
Ryan Galvin has made some progress when it comes to the toughness of the men’s game, going out on loan is often critical to a young player’s overall development.
Galvin has made one senior appearance for Wednesday, playing 45 minutes versus Rochdale in the EFL Trophy. Is he likely to have his contract renewed to make more first team appearances under Darren Moore in the future?
Decision Could Come Sooner Rather Than Later
The decision to keep both of the youngsters or wave goodbye to Durrant and Galvin will come sooner rather than later you assume, after Wednesday’s shock 4-0 defeat at London Road in the first leg of the League One playoffs.
Sheffield Wednesday were played off the park for the full 90 minutes, Jonson Clarke-Harris scoring the final goal of the night to give Darren Ferguson’s Peterborough a sizeable lead going into the away leg at Hillsborough this coming Thursday.
Barring a miracle, it looks as if Darren Moore’s side will be playing third tier football once more when the next campaign rolls around. Therefore, with Moore stating that he’s waiting for the playoffs to be finished, Durrant and Galvin might well know their futures at the club imminently.
What Has Darren Moore Said?
Speaking to the Sheffield Star, Darren Moore was briefed on the future of Sam Durrant and Ryan Galvin. The Wednesday boss remained tight-lipped on both their futures, focussing on the second playoff leg versus Peterborough United.
He said: “The best thing to do is to deal with that when the play-offs are over. We’ve signalled that to both players in terms of keeping the focus on what is happening now.”
“They’ve been in the group, they’ve been training with the group and enjoying it – and they’ve been a part of it. So we’ll leave that until afterwards, and then we’ll make those decisions accordingly.”
Writer’s View
It’s always intriguing to see what players are kept on by managers when the season is officially over, the retained list always generates conversation no matter what club is involved.
Sam Durrant and Ryan Galvin will be hoping that Darren Moore sees a future for the both of them at Sheffield Wednesday, both still relatively young, unfinished players who might well excel if given time.
When the playoffs are over, Durrant and Galvin will no doubt be in for a nervous wait to see if their future remains at The Owls after talks with Darren Moore and others.
