Former Lincoln City Loanee Set For Departure?

Former Lincoln City loanee and current Portsmouth midfielder Joe Morrell could be set for a summer move away from Fratton Park, according to journalist Darren Witcoop.Β

It is understood that the 26-year-old Welsh international reportedly has admirers from other EFL clubs as well as abroad following a season in which he has caught the eye in League One, alongside representing his country at international level.

Who is Joe Morrell?

Midfielder Joe Morrell first started his career with Bristol City, signing his first professional contract with the Ashton Gate side in December 2012 after initially turning down an offer from Premier League giants Liverpool.

Ten months on from signing his professional contract with Bristol City, Morrell would go on to make his debut for the club in October 2013 in a 2-1 defeat to Wycombe Wanderers in the Football League Trophy.

Loan spells away from Ashton Gate at the likes of Sutton United, Margate and Cheltenham Town followed for Morrell to bulk up his experience of playing football on a regular basis, before the midfielder headed out on loan again, this time to Lincoln City.

Whilst with the Imps during the 2019/20 season, Morrell would go on to catch the eye at Sincil Bank, making a total of 32 appearances for the Lincolnshire side, as well as picking up the club’s Player of the Year award in a season that was eventually cancelled due to COVID-19.

Shortly after his loan spell with Lincoln, Morrell would go on to leave Bristol City permanently to move to Luton Town in October 2020. Morrell’s time at Kenilworth Road would go on to be brief as he only made 11 appearances in all competitions for the club before he was on the move again.

Morrell’s next club would go on to be Portsmouth, signing for the club on a permanent transfer in August 2021 where he still plays his football today. The midfielder has grown to be a key part of Pompey’s midfield, making 74 appearances in all competitions at Fratton Park since his arrival, scoring once.

The 26-year-old has also enjoyed a stellar career playing in the Wales national team, with the midfielder making 34 appearances for the Red Dragons since his debut in September 2019.

Writer’s View

Joe Morrell is seen as a key part of the Portsmouth midfield in a season in which the club will be disappointed after missing out on the League One playoffs and, therefore, spending another season playing in the third division of English Football.

Morrell is a player that hasn’t had a disappointing season however and I don’t think there is much surprise with the fact that he is getting interest from clubs who play at a higher level than Portsmouth.

With his experience playing in the Welsh national side a big asset to wherever the midfielder ends up, he is sure to be a solid signing for anyone but in saying that, the chances that John Mousinho and Portsmouth might want to keep him are most likely high so with that, it could be a difficult deal for any club to get done.
