Former Southend United goalkeeper Daniel Bentley made his Premier League debut for Wolverhampton Wanderers in a 2-0 defeat to Manchester United yesterday.
Antony opened the scoring for the Red Devils before Alejandro Garnacho got United’s second, putting their UEFA Champions League hopes back on track.
The 29-year-old had a seven-year spell at Roots Hall, amassing over 130 appearances for the Shrimpers. He rose through the youth ranks in South-East Essex and was previously in Arsenal’s academy.
Ahead of the 2016/17 campaign, Bentley swapped Southend for now Premier League outfit Brentford.
He joined Bristol City after a number of years with the Bees, signing a four-year contract in 2019. He was a regular at Ashton Gate and his consistency between the sticks started to catch the eye of Premier League sides.
Wolves won the race for his services in the January transfer window and he made his first start for the East Midlands-based side yesterday, following the absence of first-choice ‘keeper José Sá.
Bentley made a number of good saves to prevent Casemiro, Jadon Sancho and Anthony – showing that he will provide Sá competition for the first-team spot.

Bentley has deservedly got his chance to shine on the biggest stage after many seasons plying his trade in the Football League. He was a fan favourite during his time at Southend and most Shrimpers supporters aren’t surprised by his rise to the top.
