Swinton Town’s newly appointed manager Micheal Flynn, recently sat down and spoke about his excitement of becoming the Robins’s new boss, with quotes from the club’s website.
After exclusively being revealed here at TheRealEFL that the former Walsall boss with taking charge of Swindon next season, Flynn got to speak in full during an interview with the club.
Who Is Micheal Flynn
The 42-year-old has a wealth of knowledge about the Football League, with over 24 years of experience as a player and manager in English football. With a playing career that spans nearly 20 years, the Welshmen got his first managerial job with Newport as a caretaker manager whilst as a player with the club.
Following a ‘great escape’, that saw Newport avoid relegation to non-league, Flynn took the job permanently and enjoyed two seasons of making the League Two playoffs.
Unfortunately during his fifth full season with the club, results started to dip and led to the manager resigning from his role.
Flynn soon found another opportunity later in the season when appointed by Walsall. After ensuring the club’s safety in League Two, the Saddlers failed to get the same ‘bounce’ Flynn had with Newport and departed from the club last month.
Is He The Right Man For The Job?
Until Flynn’s Swindon team gets to show itself on the pitch, we will never know if this is the right appointment. However, with the Robins having a young squad and the approach of a youth coach making the step up not working, the former player’s experience will certainly help the club.
With both success and disappointment as a manager in the fourth tier of English football, Flynn’s high knowledge of the game alongside his assistant Wayne Hatswell, will hopefully give fans something to cheer about.
What’s Been Said:
Sitting down with the Swindon media team, Flynn provided details on what interested him to the club and how the fans are so important to success.
“First and foremost, I can’t thank (the fans) enough and the only way I think I can thank them is by giving them a team to be proud of.
“I can’t wait to get going, yesterday was an exceptional reception and I want to give the supporters something to be proud of week in week out.
“I know Phill Brown and Richie Wellens spoke nothing but positivity about how good the club can be. I felt it when we’ve come here as an opposition and also as a player, it’s a proper football ground, a proper football club.
“Everyone keeps saying you need experience at this level and I’m a firm believer if you’ve got the ability you’re ready to give it a go. Experience helps in the key moments but I’m close to 350 games as a manager and you learn as you go on.
“For me, this was an opportunity I couldn’t turn down and I’m going to grab it with both hands.
“We’ve got to make sure that we’re consistent over the course of the season and the fans stick with us because once you got that many fans behind you, it’s such a powerful tool to keep the players and confidence going.
“(The fans) can expect an honest and hard working team that wants to play football, theres a good nucleus of a squad here.
“I’ll look to add an few but it’s not a total rebuild. The players have had an okay season, they’ve played some very good football at times and with a little bit of tweaking I’m sure we can improve on the position that we finished this season.”
Writer’s View
The new manager spoke with excitement and optimism during his interview that I think Town fans can get behind. The fact Flynn thinks the damage done this season shouldn’t drag on too much, is a major positive for those expecting a fast turnaround.
With the experience of taking teams to the playoffs, if a successful summer can be had, then at worst at least fans can get excited about a long-awaited cup run.
