Five Potential Destinations For Cheltenham Town Forward Alfie May This Summer – Opinion

Alfie May’s future at Cheltenham Town will be a concern for fans of Wade Elliott’s side, the dynamic 29-year-old attacker could well have played his final game as a Robins player this weekend versus Charlton.

If that is the case, the popular forward bowed out with a late equalising goal to give his side a share of the points against Dean Holden’s men – his 88th minute strike levelling the score at 2-2, his 20th goal in another fruitful campaign for the ex Doncaster Rovers man.

It looks ever more likely when you read into May’s demeanour at full-time against the Addicks that he will up and leave, he was visibly emotional speaking after the match after receiving a rapturous round of applause from all corners of the Completely Suzuki Stadium after the contest was over.

The 29-year-old has cemented himself into the Cheltenham hall of fame, scoring over 50 goals over a number of campaigns down in Gloucestershire. Fancying a new challenge to test himself, it’ll be intriguing to see where May ends up next.

Wrexham AFC

The first club that might well see if they can acquire Alfie May’s services after a barnstorming few seasons at Cheltenham could well be Wrexham, the Welsh powerhouses wanting to flex their muscles still with statement signings ahead of playing League Two football next campaign.

Although May would be dropping down a division to sign for the Red Dragons, you would imagine that he’ll be paid significantly more. Further, signing Alfie May would mean Wrexham would have one of the deadliest and most feared strike duos in the division – Alfie May joining forces with Wrexham’s star-man Paul Mullin up top if this move came into fruition.

If Alfie May was to finally confirm rumours that he’s wanted by Wrexham and join the Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney rollercoaster in Wales, expect the Red Dragons to push towards another promotion up to the third tier on their return to the EFL.

Birmingham City

It might well be the case that Alfie May even jumps up a division if he plays his cards right, Birmingham City allegedly unsuccessful in the summer of 2022 in bringing May to St Andrews.

Alfie May’s continued goalscoring heroics for Cheltenham will have made Birmingham even hungrier to try and secure May’s services, the 29-year-old high on the priority list for the Blues.

With a forward line consisting of Scott Hogan, Troy Deeney and Lucas Jutkiewicz, Alfie May won’t necessarily add any youthfulness to this ageing attack. But, he would be able to add some much-needed energy and bite to proceedings.

May could well become a fan favourite at Birmingham if he put pen to paper on a move to the club, an energetic source of goals to inject some life into a club that has become used to underwhelming performances.

Reading FC

Dropping down from the Championship after a points deduction put a final nail in the coffin, Reading could well look to swoop for Alfie May to kickstart a potential promotion-winning campaign.

Alfie May is a notorious goalscoring threat at League One level now, so it would be a no-brainer for the Royals to go after the 29-year-old this summer.

Boasting experienced strikers such as Shane Long and Andy Carroll, Reading lack a quick and dynamic forward away from the more physical game Andy Carroll provides for the Royals. Alfie May could well give the Royals something different in attack, alongside a striker who is confident and assured in the third tier.

Gillingham

Venturing back down to League Two, the Gills could well attempt to sign Alfie May this summer after reports the Kent based club fought for his signature in recent transfer windows.

This wouldn’t be the first time Neil Harris’ men have tempted a League One talent to relocate to pastures new in the fourth tier, Tim Dieng leaving Exeter behind in League One for Gillingham this January. Home comforts will also come into the equation, Alfie May born and bred in Gravesend nearby to Gillingham in Kent.

If the Gills were to sign Alfie May, they’d be a force to be reckoned with in League Two next campaign.

Preston North End

This might well be an outside bet for Alfie May’s next whereabouts, but Preston have had rumoured interest in the 29-year-old ever since his breakthrough League One season with Cheltenham – May’s 2021-22 season saw the former Doncaster man explode into life, scoring 23 times in 46 appearances.

This prior interest in May could well be reignited, especially with the unfortunate news regarding Ched Evans at Deepdale in recent months – the ex Sheffield United striker sidelined with a serious medical condition. Could May fill Evans’ boots, providing adequate backup in the Championship?

With a number of the exciting attackers for Ryan Lowe’s Lilywhites at this present time only loanees – Thomas Cannon on loan from Everton sticking out in particular – the Preston boss might see May as a reinforcement worth gambling on after excelling in the league below.
