Sheffield Wednesday defender Reece James has hinted he would like to stay at the club after his loan finishes at the end of the season, with quotes from YorkshireLive.
The Blackpool loanee has enjoyed a successful season in League One and would like to extend his stay at Hillsborough, however, could be set to miss Wednesday’s playoff run due to an injury sustained last month.
Who Is Reece James?
The versatile left-back joined the Owls on a season-long loan from Blackpool and has featured 29 times this year. While also providing depth at central midfield, James has proven to be a quality League One player this season with three assists and numerous acknowledgements from manager Darren Moore.
Permanently with Blackpool, the 29-year-old wasn’t featured as regularly last season in the Championship, so made the drop-down with Wednesday to the third tier of English football. However, James’ future is in the air with the Tangerines facing relegation and Wednesday potentially getting promoted.
Will He Play In A Wednesday Shirt Again?
James last featured for the Owls in a 3-0 victory to Accrington last month, but came off injured just before halftime. With the severity of the injury unknown, Moore recently made comments, however, couldn’t confirm whether the defender would be back in time for the playoffs.
Now with the knowledge that his parent club will be in League One next season, a decision will have to be made if he stays in the division or joins Wednesday in whatever league they end up in.
What’s Been Said:
James spoke about what his future could hold next season and sounded like he had a preference to stay with the League One side.
“I’m keen for something to happen, but we’ll have to wait and see. There’s not really been any contact with Blackpool, they’ve got their focus and I’ve got mine.”
Writer’s View
While James may have a preference to stay with the Owls with him still contracted to Blackpool, the decision will come with the club. The defender may feel more valued at Sheffield, however, with the Seasiders currently without a permanent manager, it may be best to wait to see who comes in.
Alongside the fact Wednesday still doesn’t know what league they will be playing in next year, many conversations will be had about his future.
