Colchester United sporting director Dmitri Halajko, has said he would have to receive a ‘very, very good offer’ if the U’s are to consider allowing any of their talented players to leave this summer, with quotes from the Colchester Gazette.
With a group of young players, including League Two Young Player of the Season Junior Tchamadeu having strong seasons, the U’s director understands there will be plenty of interest in his squad and would consider selling them if an offer came in that ‘can’t be turned down.’
Who Are Players Of Interest?
Despite a lacklustre season, Colchester does have a group of players who will demand interest from higher clubs and divisions. Atop of that list is 19-year-old Tchamadeu, who made the League Two Team of the Season this year. With 78 professional appearances already to his name, the defender is coming off the back of an excellent season that will have teams oozing his potential.
Other names that could be on teams shortlists are midfielder Noah Chilvers, promising forward Samson Tovide and the in-form Ossama Ashley.
What Has Colchester Achieved This Season?
With one game left to play on the season, Colchester has spent most of its time fighting at the bottom of the table, however will enter the new year with promise.
After former manager Matt Bloomfield left towards the end of the season for League One Wycombe Wanderers, the U’s were left in the dark and appointed Ben Garner. Formerly of Charlton and Swindon, the 42-year-old has succussed at this level before and will look to improve on a season that has Colchester in 20th place.
What’s Been Said:
Halajko spoke to the Colchester Gazette about the possibility of some young players departing in the summer.
“We’re in a good contract situation with them, they’re performing really well and they love being here.
“We’ve got them all under contract or with an option on their contract, so if they do depart the club for any reason, it will have to be on our terms.
“It will only be because we’ve had a very, very good offer through the door – that’s the only reason any of those players would leave.
“But either way, it’s a position for the club that’s positive and for the young players, it’s positive.”
Writer’s View
What Halajko is saying is wise, as Colchester get ready for a big transfer window ahead. In an ideal world, keeping all these youngsters and developing them so that they can compete near the top is the plan, however, no one player is bigger than the team and if a substantial offer comes in, it may be wise to accept.
What’s important next is to reinvest the money wisely. The only way to improve after selling an important player is to spend on multiple pieces, helping to build the overall quality of the squad.
