Sheffield Wednesday Boss Confirms Contract Decisions

Sheffield Wednesday manager Darren Moore has revealed he has spoken to several youngsters who will be released at the end of the season, according to The Star.

An official list with the names of players set to leave will be announced in the forthcoming future, as Moore is still in the process of letting the players know of the club’s decision.

The Hard Life Of A Youth Player

Even with a number of first-team players set to be out of contract at the end of the season, Moore was specifically talking about the youth players who will be seen out of the door. Starting at these clubs from a young age, it can be hard for a teenager to be told there no good enough and need to move on.

At that age, all they know about is trying to make it in football, so when this happens, a choice between working towards something else or continuing with their dream has to be made.

How Has Wednesday’s Season Gone?

The Owls are set for another chance at promotion in the playoffs, after a poor run of form saw them drop from the top of the table to third. Their season includes a run of 22 games unbeaten, which is the best unbeaten run across the top-four English divisions.

However, all was lost when in a month span from early March to April, Wednesday only picked up four points out of a possible 18. While even on a current three-game winning streak heading into the playoffs, there will be disappointment in the club that automatic promotion was not secured.

What’s Been Said:

Moore explained to The Star about the conversation he has had with players whose contracts are set to expire.

“I just spoke to a player before this press conference, one of those that we have released, and I was explaining to him that while being released is really tough, they’re decisions that are made based only on an opinion.

“It shouldn’t formulate who you are, and it doesn’t mean you can’t go elsewhere and go and kickstart your career.

“I told him that he might be leaving Wednesday, and he might have to drop down a level, but to see the grass, see the pitch, and have mind over matter… You have to see the opportunity of first-team football, so don’t let our opinion here stop you from your dream of becoming a professional footballer.

“I think the players have been told now, but I’ll be leaving the club to release a statement.”

Writer’s View

With how football and business work, thing like releasing players at the end of the season is inevitable. Doing such to youth players can be a bit tougher as them getting a second opportunity is a bit harder to come by.

However, at the end of the day, youngsters that have gotten to this point are still talented enough to succeed in football. Failure can be used as a motivation in some cases and if the players set to be released around all football clubs use it efficiently, their dreams can still be achieved.
