Former Charlton Boss In Line For Premier League Job

Former Charlton and Oxford manager Karl Robinson is set to take a coaching role alongside Sam Allardyce at Premier League side Leeds United, according to Adam Pope via his Twitter.

Sam Allardyce is reportedly set to take over the side who are currently battling relegation in the Premier League, as the side looks to the man who has been deemed a ‘survival expert’ in the past to add their survival to his resume.

Leeds are currently out of the relegation zone on goal difference, and Allardyce is certainly no stranger to these situations, the 68-year-old former England manager has been through plenty of these fights as both a player and a manager.

Robinson’s coaching career.

Robinson started out his managerial career in 2010, where he would spend six years as manager of MK Dons. He would enjoy a good spell in charge of the club as he led them to fifth place in their first season, before defeat in the playoffs to Peterborough United.

His best season with the club would come in 2014-15, where he would not only guide the club to the Championship as runners-up, but they would also enjoy a famous 4-0 victory over Manchester United in the EFL Cup.

They would be relegated the following season and Robinson would be sacked in October 2016, it was also reported in May 2016, that Robinson had turned down an offer to take charge at Leeds United.

In November 2016, he would be named Charlton Athletic manager, a job which he would depart by mutual consent in March 2018.

His third coaching job would come in the form of Oxford United, during his time with the club he would lead them to the playoffs twice, but they would fall short on both occasions. This would be his most recent job as in February 2023, he would be sacked by the club after a 3-0 home defeat saw the club extend a run of eight games without a win.

Working together again.

The new role would see Robinson work under Allardyce once again, as one of the former Oxford United manager’s first jobs would see him working under Sam Allardyce as a fitness coach with Blackburn Rovers. Robinson would work under three different managers during the two years he spent with Rovers, he would be part of Allardyce’s team for 26 games.

After two years, he would leave the club in 2009, before taking on his first management role at MK Dons.

What’s been said?

Reports have continued to circulate over recent days of the possibility of Javi Gracia losing his job at Leeds following their 4-1 defeat to Bournemouth at the weekend. And Sam Allardyce has already emerged as the favourite candidate for the job. Since this news, it is highly believed, Karl Robinson will be joining his former boss as his assistant coach. Robinson has been out of work since February of this year, whereas Allardyce’s last appearance in the dugout was in the 2020/21 season as West Bromwich Albion manager.

Robinson is a manager with a proven track record in the past, despite a difficult time in charge of Oxford this season. This could be a good role for him to get back into management, but not only that, could be a much safer way of gaining experience at a higher level.

In the past, he has proven his salt as a manager, guiding MK Dons to promotion, as well as playoff appearances with Oxford United.
