Gillingham Reveal Huge Breakthrough In Negotiations

Gillingham manager Neil Harris has confirmed that defender Cheye Alexander will be with the club next season as confirmed in his post-match interview posted on the club’s official Twitter page.

Gillingham moved a point closer to safety this weekend, holding promotion chasing Stockport to a 1-1 draw at Priestfield. However, the impressive performance wasn’t the only thing that caught the attention of the Gillingham faithful.

During his post-match interview, Gills boss Neil Harris confirmed that Cheye Alexander will be staying with the club beyond the end of this season. While also confirming that contracts have been offered to a number of players.

“We have offered five or six players contracts. Max is the first to commit. Cheye will be with us next year”

Gillingham, it could be argued, are eager to conclude negotiations with the current group, ahead of the summer transfer window. It looks set to be another busy one at Priestfield with five/six players expected to come through the door, as confirmed by Head of Recruitment Andy Hessenthaler in his exclusive interview with TheRealEFL.

With Ehmer’s contract already extended earlier in the week, Alexander looks set to be the second player to commit his immediate future to the Gills. Alexander joined Gillingham at the start of this season on a free transfer and has gone on to make 33 league appearances so far this season for the Kent club.

After a rocky start, he appears to be settling into his role within the Gills defence, starting the last 13 games.

It’s great to see that the Gills are acting quickly to get their business done. It’s clear that squad planning has taken place at the club, and they are eager to get their important players locked in for next season.

It’s is starting to feel like something is brewing at Priestfield, with Max already locked in and contract offers going out to five/six players. From the outside looking in, it looks like Harris and the club are trying to keep the squad together, to ensure the project remains on an upward trajectory.

Cheye has more than earned his new contract with his performances since the turn of the year. It was certainly a rocky start for the 28-year-old but he has come into his own in recent months. His goal against his old club Wimbledon is the highlight for me.
