Wrexham Owner Reynolds Signs Contract To Further Secure Ties To The Area

Wrexham co-owner Ryan Reynolds has cemented his ties with the club and the city signing contracts for the purchase of a £1.5 million houses in nearby Marford, The Sun reported yesterday (9 April 2023).

As Wrexham take on Notts County at home this afternoon, in what is being dubbed the National League title decider, fans will see this as a demonstration of his long-term commitment to the club. Notts County and Wrexham sit equal on points going into today’s head-to-head, with a Notts County wiping out Wrexham’s potential advantage from a game in hand.

Reynolds purchased Wrexham with actor, and Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Rob McElhenney, who was the driving force behind the acquisition, in 2020, promising to strengthen Wrexham’s ideals and repay the club’s supporters for their loyalty and faith. This has not been without criticism, and fans were concerned about the longevity of the Hollywood duo’s commitment, so the house purchase will help to allay any remaining fears. During their time at the club so far, Reynolds and McElhenney have invested over $10 million into the club, although recent financial filings revealed this will be re-paid, with interest, by the club.

Documentary ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ is currently filming its second season, after the first series ended with Wrexham destined to spend another year in the National League after Stockport County and Grimsby were promoted ahead of them. With Reynolds and McElhenney currently losing nearly £3m per year in the National League, promotion to League Two is essential for the survival of their current model which includes a raft of League One standard players and their associated wages. These losses are offset by turnover of £6m in 2022, a 600% increase, and largely attributed to match day income, kit, and significant commercial sponsorships, including shirt sponsor TikTok.

The four-bedroom property is situated in the (previously?) quiet Welsh village of Marford, and will be the perfect base for Reynolds, his wife the actress Blake Lively, and their four daughters, aged between two months and eight years when they visit The Racecourse. Reynolds recently pledged a sabbatical from acting to better concentrate on his commercial ventures including mobile phone operator Mint Mobile, which has just been sold to T-Mobile in the US for over $300 million, and Maximum Effort, his film production company and digital marketing agency, and Wrexham FC. Other investments have included Aviation Gin, 1Password, and Wealthsimple. That statement, along with this real estate purchase may suggest that he is likely to take a closer interest in the day-to-day running of the club, a move that will no doubt delight Wrexham’s newer fans, and perhaps concern their more long-term ones.
