Northampton Town Reveals Summer Transfer Plans

Northampton Town is in another fight for promotion this season, and manager Jon Brady believes he has a strong foundation that only “five or six” new signings may be needed in the Summer.

In their second consecutive season in the fourth tier of English football, the Cobblers have had a consistent season as of late and are already looking ahead to their plans for the next transfer window.

Jon Brady has continuously praised his group of players this year, with the majority of them signed on for next season, including some until 2025.

Currently sitting 2nd in League Two following a 1-1 draw with fellow rivals Stevenage on the weekend, Northampton has their eyes firmly set on promotion after the heartbreak of last year.

Heading into the last game of the season in the automatic promotion places, they narrowly missed out after Bristol Rovers won 7-0 on the final day to secure their place on goal difference. A disappointing loss to Mansfield in the playoffs then set the Cobbles up for another year in League Two.

Now Brady believes his squad has a “strong foundation” underneath them, and regardless of what division they are playing in next season, is confident his team won’t need many new additions.

The Cobblers only have Ali Koiki, Jonny Maxted and Tom King with contracts expiring this year, alongside various loan players returning to their parent club.

Speaking ahead of their Good Friday game away to Newport County, Brady said: “Whatever comes of this season, we are in a great place as a football club in terms of our recruitment and what we’ve done.

“We are really pleased with what we have here and I believe we have a real strong foundation for next season, whether we’re in League One or League Two.

We won’t have to go and hunt for loads of players in the summer. We’ll probably only be looking at five or six for the start of next season, regardless of the division, so it’s all positive.”

Writer’s View

Brady isn’t wrong when he says this team has a strong foundation, however, it is interesting for him to be this open about the team’s Summer plans.

What I take most from this is how Northampton don’t know what division they will be in next season, regardless their recruitment will be similar. The step up from the two leagues isn’t as large as the gap in higher tiers, so Brady is clearly confident that his group of players can get the job done this year, and maybe even challenge next season as well.
