Derby County manager Paul Warne has spoken of the need for a massive revamp of the playing squad, as reported by the BBC.
After losing their place in the top six following the weekend’s defeat to Ipswich Town, Warne has stated his believe that the squad put together after coming out of administration last summer has ‘flaws’.
“We have a great group now but you can see that we have some flaws in it. I’m not blaming anyone for that, but we have.” said the former Rotherham United manager.
It was a tumultuous summer for The Rams following their relegation from the Championship. The club had just five players when they were taken over by local property developer David Clowes.
Wayne Rooney then decided to leave the manager’s seat and was replaced on a temporary basis by Liam Rosenior. Rosenior managed to put a squad together, including high profile arrivals such as David McGoldrick but they have still operated with the smallest squad in League One.
Warne, who guided The Millers to promotion from this division last season, was appointed permanent manager in September and is still hopeful his current side can repeat that feat. “We might have enough in the building currently to finish the season well and to go up. But I’m aware that surgery’s needed, I’m not stupid.”
County have seven games left in which to get back to form and grab one of the coveted spots in the end of season lottery.

Derby County are a big club, particularly at League One level, however, having to put a squad together in such a short time is not ideal. It’s interesting timing from Warne to come out and say this as there was no mention during the winning runs. I do also wonder how a squad react after being told they have flaws and surgery to the playing staff is required.
