Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony predicts a huge future transfer fee for Posh starlet Ronnie Edwards according to comments from the Hard Truth Podcast.
Ronnie Edwards has been tipped for greatness ever since putting pen to paper on a move to Peterborough United all the way back in 2020, the young defender joining from Barnet with a big reputation despite only making one senior appearance for The Bees.
He’s excelled ever since leaving The Hive, becoming a first-team regular for Posh and even amassing nearly 80 appearances for the League One promotion hopefuls, all whilst still being in the infancy of his senior career.
The biggest test of his career to date was the step-up to the Championship when his Peterborough side won promotion to the second tier. He would win Player of the Season during this doomed campaign in the Championship for Posh. However, the Cambridgeshire outfit suffered relegation straight back to League One.
The youngster held his own in many encounters in the Championship in spite of the poor collective showing from that particular season.
A memorable display at home versus Fulham saw the youngster deal with Aleksandar Mitrovic admirably for the full 90 minutes before the Serbian unfortunately netted late on.
The ex Barnet defender has had international recognition as a result, capped a total of four times for the England U20’s. Players in that similar age bracket include Bristol City’s wonder-kid Alex Scott alongside the likes of Manchester City and Preston loanee Liam Delap.
With Ronnie Edwards garnering interest from Premier League suitors Chelsea and Crystal Palace previously, Darragh MacAnthony – who hosts the Hard Truth Podcast – has stated in the past that he believes the sky is the limit for his young defender who could go for an astronomical fee in the near future.
He said: “He’s ice cool and he has so much going for him. I know some people like to point out his deficiencies, but show me a 19 year-old who doesn’t have them. Ronnie is as good as they come and it doesn’t matter where he goes he will be a success.
“The club that tried to buy him the most know they would make £40million plus on him in a couple of years. Average centre-backs can go for £60million.”
“They tried to get in before the big boys come for Ronnie because they know they will. The other club interested in him said they will be back in January. Ronnie will be bought and in two and a half years he will be sold for £60million to £70million such is the current market for young centre-backs.”
In a more recent episode of the podcast, he also revealed that he’d love Ronnie to move to his beloved Liverpool – a club renowned for world-class defensive talent in the form of Virgil Van Dijk.
He said: “He’s going to have a great career. I’d love my club in the Premier League [Liverpool] to buy him.”
Writer’s View
It wouldn’t be out of the ordinary, in the current climate we are in regarding transfer fees, to see Ronnie Edwards depart Posh, succeed elsewhere and then demand a sizeable fee for his services.
He’s been almost ever-present this season for Posh under two separate managers, and with him notching up 77 appearances for Peterborough United during his early career, he might well want to challenge himself elsewhere soon.
If Peterborough don’t get promoted this campaign, expect a number of clubs to circle for his signature. Even if they do go up, it’s looking more likely than not that Ronnie Edwards will depart and start paving out a path that could lead to a mega money move to a Premier League giant very soon.
