Former Premier League Star Impresses In Wrexham Debut

Ben Foster kept a clean sheet in his first start for the Welsh side in a 3-0 victory over York City, following his move to Wrexham on Thursday.

The 39-year-old came out of retirement to join Phil Parkinson’s side on Deadline Day after Rob Lainton suffered a knee ligament injury, keeping him out for a number of weeks. This is now his second spell at the Racecourse Ground, having been on loan with the Dragons 18 years ago.

Foster admitted that he turned down a move to Premier League outfit Newcastle United in the summer, and there was also reported interest from Leeds United.

Minstermen ‘keeper Ryan Whitley scored an own goal to open the scoring before two goals from Sam Dalby and Elliot Lee secured a vital three points.

Wrexham are leading the way at the top of the Vanarama National League table, with Notts County breathing down their neck – three points behind them having played a game more.

Following the win, Foster was delighted with the result, and meeting owner Ryan Reynolds: ‘3-0. Clean Sheet. Bosh! Just met Ryan Reynolds in the tunnel. Days don’t get much better than that!’

The experienced goalkeeper has signed a deal to the end of the season and he will be looking to make it consecutive clean sheets as they host Oldham Athletic on Saturday.

Foster was a much-need addition following Lainton’s injury and he could give Wrexham that added edge as they approach the run-in.

He made a good first impression in the win over York, and he could give them that added boost they need to return to the Football League.
