Last season’s disappointment, is something that Sheffield Wednesday striker Lee Gregory feels is vital to them storming into the title race this season as reported on The Yorkshire Post.
Wednesday have had an absolutely fantastic season and the club look set to make a return to the Championship, after two years away.
The Yorkshire club, currently sit 2nd in the table, two points behind league leaders Plymouth, but Wednesday have two games in hand on The Pilgrims, and a chance to leapfrog them this weekend.
Unless Wednesday collapse, they look nailed on for automatic promotion this year, or at least another visit to the playoffs with them 18 points clear of Peterborough United in 7th who sit just outside the play-off places.
Last season was one of huge disappointment for The Owls, missing out on promotion, finishing 4th in the table and losing to eventual winners Sunderland, in the play-off semi-final.
Gregory had this to say when asked about the title race and if the chance to put points on the board while Plymouth are away on their trip to Wembley, will play a part in the title race.
“I don’t know ask me at the end of the season”
“I think that it affected us last year (When they reached the play-off semi-finals), we were looking three-four games in front. This season we’ve stopped that and we just look at it one game at a time. I think that’s helped us massively”
A very honest review from the 34-year-old, he went on to speak regarding the game this weekend against League One’s bottom club Forest Green Rovers.
“With us losing on Tuesday night it’s massive for us to bounce back on Sunday”
“We need to take it one game at a time, forget Plymouth, forget Ipswich, forget the league, just focus on Forest Green Sunday. All we’ve got to do is just try and get a win there and then everything else will take care of itself”
“I think it’s the biggest thing we’ve done and another thing we have to learn is bouncing back rather than letting the negativity seep in and cause another upset”
Eager to put the mistakes of Tuesday night against Barnsley behind them, Wednesday ended up losing 4-2 at Oakwell, but can return to the top of the table with a win against Forest Green Rovers, with rivals Plymouth heading to Wembley to take on Bolton in the Papa John’s Trophy final. This gives Wednesday the chance to leapfrog the Pillgrims and go a point clear with a game in hand at the top.

From a player’s point of view, I’ve never understood looking two/three/four games ahead it’s always been the next for me but I do understand how the mind can get carried away.
Especially in the position that Wednesday are in at the moment, when you’re visiting a club bottom of the table, you’re expected to win it’s easy to start looking past that game and onto the next.
This, however, is how upsets happen in football, one dip in concentration can be the difference between 3 points, 1 point or none and in Wednesday’s case winning the title or not.
