Premier League Legend Hits Out At Portsmouth

Sol Campbell has revealed his hurt at not being considered for the Portsmouth management job, despite applying for the position twice, he admitted in an interview with the Portsmouth News.

Campbell revealed his hurt at not being considered by the club he once captained to FA Cup glory in 2008.

The former England international signed for Pompey on a free transfer from Arsenal in 2006 and was part of the Portsmouth team that went on to win the FA Cup in 2008.

He revealed he had applied for the position twice, once following the departure of Kenny Jackett, and again most recently when the club parted with Danny Cowley in January. Campbell never received a response either time, he stated.

‘I applied for the Portsmouth job twice and didn’t even get an interview. That hurts’

The historic centre-back who won many titles in his illustrious career, and was part of the historic Invincible Arsenal team in 2003/04, retired from the game in 2012. He then went on to work on receiving his UEFA pro license and became assistant manager of the Trinidad national team in 2017.

In November 2018 he received his first position in charge of Macclesfield Town, a stint which would last only 30 games, his second managerial stint would be even shorter at Southend United, lasting only 23 games.

He would not be released from either club, he even went on to save Macclesfield from relegation, however, he would step away from both positions due to financial issues which raised before his arrival.

In an interview with FourFourTwo in 2021, Campbell would speak of his frustration as he searches for a new job.

The sad reality is I might not find another club again”

Campbell is a legendary player and one that will be remembered for a long time to come, his managerial skills remain to be seen on full display still, but he has managed to save teams from poor positions, such as Macclesfield and Southend, who were fighting financial fires and he still managed to avoid relegation with both clubs.

It could be a different story for both teams who were relegated following his departure from the clubs, Southend now play in the National League while Macclesfield Town no longer exist and have since been restarted, now known as Macclesfield FC, the financial situations are most to blame for their current situations, and there may not have been much Campbell could have done.

  1. It’s a shame Pompey did not have the manners to acknowledge a serious application from a qualified and respected old boy. Furthermore, it would have costed nothing to give him a chance at interview to make his case, even if those involved with the selection process did not, initially, think he was what they were looking for. In my book good manners are important, cost nothing and, in the long term, usually reap a bonus somewhere down the line.
