Cheltenham Town face a battle to keep star striker Alfie May at the club with the striker’s contract up this summer, as Jon Palmer of Gloucestershire Live reported.
Palmer goes on to explain that the club do have the option to extend the 29-year-old’s contract by another 12 months, but question marks still remain over the Englishman’s future beyond that point.
May joined the Robins in January 2020 for an undisclosed fee and quickly made his mark for the club. He went on to be part of the Robins side that claimed the League Two title and promotion to the third tier, where the club have remained since then.
So far this season, the striker has scored 12 goals in 29 appearances and will be looking to add more to that total in the final stages of this season. And the club will be hoping for the same, as they currently stare at the drop zone, however, have managed to earn themselves two wins in their last two games, which they were not expected to win. Both games featured superb goals from the striker.
In September 2022, Alfie May became the club’s record goalscorer in the English Football League, as his winner against Cambridge United was his 40th for the club in both League One and League Two.
Many expected May to depart the club in the summer transfer window of this season, as reports emerged of Championship clubs monitoring the striker, however, the club issued a hands-off warning regarding the player, which seems to have deterred any clubs interested.

With May approaching 30, it would be wise for the club to look for an opportunity to sell in the summer should they opt to extend the contract. You can only imagine the club would take that opportunity regardless, it would ease the pressure off them to find an immediate replacement this season and give them another 12 months to find someone to replace him, as well as focus on other positions which they need to strengthen.
Given the interest from the division above, as well as his record in front of goal for the club, it would be a massive loss for the club to let May go for free, however, the club did not have to break the bank to get their man, but it could easily be seen they could force other clubs into a situation, regardless the contract situation now affects any price tag they could demand.
Cheltenham fans, how do you feel about losing Alfie May? Will he sign a new deal?
