Loan Watch : Charlton Athletic’s Rak-Sakyi

Jesurun Rak-Sakyi joined Charlton in August 2022. In this article, we discuss Jesurun’s career so far and assess his loan at Charlton Athletic.

Jesurun Rak-Sakyi, is a 20-year-old tricky winger who came through the youth ranks at Chelsea before signing for Crystal Palace in 2019.He featured twice for the first team last season after 18 goals in the U23s earned him a Premier League start with the senior squad.

However, to further develop his game, Crystal Palace felt like a loan move was necessary, and he joined Charlton Athletic in the summer on a season-long loan after being linked to a host of EFL clubs including Lincoln City.

He has made a big impact for Charlton this season, scoring nine goals and getting three assists starting 26 games out of his 31 appearances, which demonstrates his importance to the side through two different managers.

On his debut for Charlton, it took him only 11 minutes to score his first senior goal and show Charlton fans what he is all about after they easily dispatched Plymouth Argyle by five goals to one.

He has also had to adapt, as at the start of the season he was brought in and managed by Ben Garner who presided over a disasterous spell for the club. The loanee has been able to adapt to Dean Holden’s playing style with ease becoming a key figure in the new boss’ line-up.

Charlton are currently sitting in 11th place in League One, and although as a collective they haven’t had the greatest of seasons, League One is a highly competitive league, and Rak-Sakyi has certainly done himself no harm with his performances this season.

This is Jesurun’s first full season as a senior footballer where he is getting consistent game time, and for him to be producing the numbers he has in such a difficult league is certainly exciting for Crystal Palace fans watching.

Although Jesurun has played and scored for England’s U20s on his debut, as he hasn’t yet played a senior game, he is still able to play for Ghana should he wish to make the switch.

The loan is just a basic, season-long loan with no option to buy, so the expectation is that he will return to Selhurst Park at the end of the season.

Jesurun is still very early in his development, and for him to be loaned to League One in his first senior season shows how much faith Crystal Palace have in the youngster.

He has not disappointed, and the saying “never fall in love with a loan player” seems to very much apply to him, as I imagine he’s certainly in the plans for Crystal Palace in the near future.

I am interested to see what the plans will be for Jesurun next season; will he get an opportunity in the Palace first-team squad? Will he be loaned out? Or will a club come in for him? I expect that the preseason will be a key determining factor in what Palace decide to do next season.
