Oxford United Player Admits Relegation Fight Is At The “Forefront” Of His Mind

After another defeat on the weekend to take Oxford to seven games without a win, James Henry admits the U’s may have a relegation fight on their hands, according to Liam Rice from Witney Gazette.

Karl Robinson’s side currently sits 17th in League One, however, their form tells more to the story.

With just two wins this calendar year, Oxford has seen itself drop down the table as winger James Henry admits a fight for relegation may be on the cards.

“It’s in the forefront of my mind right now, we’d be very naïve as players to not see that.”

“We can’t worry though, we’ve got to be brave in these situations and get ourselves well and truly away from it.”

“We’re not doing the business, we’re the ones that have got ourselves into this situation.”

Henry even gave an apology to the fans after he was involved in a discussion with a supporter, following their most recent defeat to Cambridge on Saturday.

“It’s not good enough, especially in these times when you’re paying your hard-earned money to come and watch your team, and we’re not winning games of football.”

Oxford currently sits seven points adrift of the drop zone, but teams below them have at least one game in hand aside from rock-bottom Forest Green Rovers, meaning it could be a very tight close to the season for Karl Robinson’s side.

Karl Robinson has expressed his frustrations during this troubled spell and with a West Country derby lined up against fellow strugglers Bristol Rovers on Saturday, this could be the perfect time to get things heading back in the right direction.

It’s not great to see a player from your own team admit they may be fighting for relegation, but at the end of the day, it is a realistic situation and good to see they understand the seriousness of it.

Oxford are a talented team that are familiar with the division but wants to leave it in the form of promotion rather than heading the other way down towards League Two.

This season they have struggled to consistently collect wins, however over a span of eight games between October and December, Oxford went unbeaten. It is unfortunate that spell of form was followed up by their current one, but it’s clear they can be successful if they want to.

For the time being it’s best to put this run of form down to a bad spell. They hold their own destiny by still being seven points clear of the relegation zone, nevertheless another bad month and it may be time to start pressing the panic button.
