Former Sunderland Forward Given FA Ban

Chris Maguire has been banned from all footballing activities by the FA for six weeks following multiple breaches of the FA’s betting rules.

The 34-year-old was charged for allegedly placing 52 bets on football matches between March 2017 and February 2022. Maguire partially denied those charges and requested a hearing, where several charges were withdrawn. An independent Regulatory Commission imposed a fine of £750 and a warning which was appealed by the FA.

The appeal was allowed and the additional suspension is considered to be served in full, being backdated to 22 November 2022, as well as the original fine and warning remaining in place.

During the charges that were brought upon the player, six of the bets placed were for teams he played for to win, two for Oxford during 2016-17 and four for Lincoln in 2021-22 seasons.

Because of the backdate on Maguire’s ban, the ban has already been considered served by the player who is currently without a club after most recently appearing for Lincoln City.

During his senior career, Maguire scored 111 goals in 561 appearances, for a number of clubs that included Aberdeen, Rotherham, Sunderland as well as Oxford and Lincoln.

The Scottish international did sign with League Two side Hartlepool, following his departure from Lincoln, who did announce the deal, however, the deal was unable to be ratified by the Players’ Football Association and the English Football League.
