Bantams Finish Season Strongly With 2-0 Defeat of Carlisle

Bradford finished their season with a third win in a row, with goals from Lee Angol and Jamie Walker securing the victory. Although the campaign as a whole has been underwhelming, the momentum built over the final three games has created optimism heading into the 2022/23 season.

The Bantams were keen to build on their previous two positive results, and it took them less than 15 minutes to open the scoring. Charles Vernam fizzed a teasing cross into Carlisle’s penalty area, before Lee Angol helped the ball on its way into the back of the net.

This was Lee Angol’s first goal since returning from a hamstring injury, and was a perfect way to celebrate his new one-year deal with the club.

One of the most obvious things Mark Hughes has changed since his arrival is the endeavour to find a second goal when going ahead. After City’s early opener, they kept pushing for a second, with Jamie Walker twice going close.

First, the ball bounced kindly for the Scotsman 12 yards out, but his first-time strike was straight at former City trialist Mark Howard. Soon after, Luke Hendrie picked Walker out inside the six-yard box, but City’s number 10 couldn’t keep his effort down.

Bradford began the second half on the front foot once more, but had to wait until the 69th minute to seal the win. Andy Cook flicked on a long ball, which Dion Pereira helped on its way to Walker. This time Walker made no mistakes, slotting the ball into the bottom corner of Howard’s net.

City were unable to find a third, but all the feelings at full time were positive.

With Mark Hughes as manager, there is a real excitement about who City may sign this summer. This excitement has only been intensified with the early permanent capture of Jamie Walker, following his loan spell from Hearts.

Now City fans are eager to see if other star players, such as Charles Vernam, will put pen to paper and join what the fans are hoping will be a promotion push next season.
