Ipswich Town slipped to their first defeat of the season last night, and it already has supporters at each other’s throats on social media.
The Tractor Boys had led the table going into their promotion six-pointer with Doncaster Rovers, but were brushed aside at the Keepmoat by a slick and organised Rovers side. Two goals for Ben Whiteman, plus goals for Cameron John and former Shrewsbury man Fejiri Okenabirhie saw Darren Moore’s side come from behind after Joe Wright had bagged on own goal to put the visitors 1-0 up.
Ipswich had only conceded twice in the league and looked set for another good night after Wright’s early calamity, but John fired a powerful drive off the underside of the bar to level thirteen minutes later. Before half time, Whiteman’s cross evaded everyone and ended up in the net, handing the advantage to the hosts.
Toto Nsial’s clumsy challenge gave Whiteman the chance to add a third from 12 yards before Okenabirhie rounded off a good evening for the hosts in South Yorkshire. Ipswich, who were missing Kayden Jackson, slipped to second, level on points with Lincoln City.
After the game, fans were divided over what happens next. Some were happy to write it off as a bad result, whilst others have a deeper foreboding. They visit Lincoln City this weekend, a side that beat them 5-3 in the same fixture last season prompting a spectacular collapse which resulted in them falling out of the top six. Some fear a repeat of last season, which has led to divided views on social media, as you’ll see below.
Have you tried our Ipswich Town player quiz?
Sometimes you just have to hold your hands up and accept you were beaten by a better side. Fair play #drfc.#itfc

Too many happy clappers in this club, I take it we should just hold our hand up and accept another season of mid table league 1 mediocrity?

Wait for it…… The boys played well, they didn't hide, lots of positives to take from a 4-1 thumping, and listen, I've played for Borussia Dortmund and Celtic you know#boreofflambert#betterstillf**koff

Now I can accept losing, but that was an absolute shower of a performance. Doncaster practically gifted all their goals, if I never see Nsiala in a blue shirt again I'll be happy

Two mad minutes apparently overriding 5 strong performances. Playing out from the back is high risk but has seen a couple of really good back to front goals already. Tonight obviously not good. Imagine these poor boys trying to do it with you lot back at PR frothing at the mouths

Dreadful performance. Nsiala reverted back to last seasons form and Holy was awful. Cornell And Woolf in for Saturday, along with Lankester for Judge, Hawkins for Sears and Bishop for Huws

Such a laugh you moaners out there when we win the players are the best when we loose a game oh he shouldn't play. He shouldn't play
Just bloody pathetic— kevin foreman (@gardenerkev0011) October 20, 2020
A 'defeat' is a 1-0 or a 2-1.
4-1 in the 3rd division is a fucking disgrace.
This is where we really start to miss Downes now..
After cruising through the 1st few games without him against shit sides— Ash Freezer (@AshleyFreezer) October 20, 2020
It was clear that a defeat would come sooner or later, just as it is clear that there will be others. But a team that aspires to promotion cannot lose in this way. I just hope it's an isolated case.
