‘Drivel’, ‘No more excuses’ – These Mansfield Town fans react to latest defeat

Mansfield Town’s miserable start to the season continued last night as they were dumped out of the EFL Trophy by Lincoln City.

The competition may not be high on the list of priorities for Stags’ fans, but the manner of the defeat may cause some concern for those watching on. Playing what seemed to be a 3-4-3, there were huge gaps in the middle of the park which the League One leaders were only too willing to fill.

The opening goal came after a sustained spell of Lincoln pressure, with former Cefn Druids man Remy Howarth having an effort that fell to the feet of Jamie Soule. The 19-year-old only joined Lincoln earlier in the day on loan, but he slotted home to give the Imps the lead.

They doubled their advantage after the break, Anthony Scully finishing with aplomb after a glorious pass from Tayo Edun. Scully had spurned a golden chance just moments earlier after being released by Theo Archibald.

The former Celtic man killed the game off not long after, this time Scully the provider with a smart lofted pass which saw Aidan Stone and Rollin Menayese get into a horrible mess. Archibald seized his chance and lifted the ball into the open net.

Mansfield did rally, a Mal Benning drive brought a diving save from debutant Ethan Ross, and Meyanese headed home from the resulting corner after losing his marker. It was too little, too late for the Stags, and Soule could have capped off his full senior debut with a second goal after Remy Howarth’s lay off.

Whilst the result might not have a big impact on Mansfield’s season, a selection of their fans are not happy with the performance.
