‘Some of our fans are embarrassing’ – Many Sunderland supporters react after latest club announcement

Sunderland defender Tom Flanagan has received a community award for the work he has done during his time on Wearside, but it seems some angry Black Cats fans have just seen it as a chance to have a dig.

Flanagan was named Community Champion at the end of last season, but has been unable to collect his award as a result of the pandemic. The Northern Ireland international has finally got his hands on the award, which aims to raise awareness of the work that PFA members put into to their club’s community activities during the season.

The 28-year-old has worked tirelessly with Foundation of Light education, health and sports projects, and is known to take part in school, hospital and hospice visits. That hasn’t gone unnoticed, with Jamie Wright, Foundation of Light’s Managing Director heaping praise on the former Burton man.

“Without a doubt, Tom has been this season’s Community Champion,” he told the clubs official site.

“He has spent a lot of time with us and gotten involved in a number of our projects, taking time to talk and chat with both younger and older members of our community.

“As the official charity of Sunderland AFC, the players play an important role in our work, helping to inspire children, young people and families across Sunderland, South Tyneside and Durham. When they attend projects, they are making incredible memories for those who they meet.

“We would like to thank Tom for his support and the time he has put aside to help us.”

Whilst that all sounds promising, the response from some fans has caused anger amongst others. Times might be tough on Wearside at the moment, but some supporters are looking for any opportunity to lash out, whilst others are prepared to give much-earned credit where it is due, as you’ll see below.
