‘Seriously?’, ‘Good joke’ – These fans react to Sunderland’s social media post

Sunderland’s League One campaign got off to a typically tepid and underwhelming start this weekend as they were held 1-1 by Bristol Rovers.

A goal from Chris Maguire with just eight minutes to go earned them a point Stadium of Light, after The Gas led for much of the game. they took the lead in the third minute from a penalty converted by left-back Luke Leahy. That came after Lee Burge brought down Jayden Mitchell-Lawson after just 90 seconds, with the stopper having failed to hold Max Ehmer’s header.

The Black Cats certainly had their fair share of the ball, with Rovers’ keeper Anssi Jaakkola, making a couple of superb stops to deny Maguire, George Dobson and Max Power. The latter’s 25-yard drive was tipped onto the post by Jaakkola, whilst the former Wigan man also had an effort cleared off the line by Mark Little.

George Dobson was shown a soft red card deep into stoppage time for a challenge on Mitchell-Lawson, compounding the rather damp start to Phil Parkinson’s first full season in charge. Despite the lack of three points, the Black Cats media team put the highlights of the game on their Twitter channel today, as is surely customary after a game.

However, it hasn’t been greeted warmly by supporters, who have seen any optimism gleaned from their 8-1 win against Aston Villa’s kids slowly begin to ebb away, as you’ll see below.
